I was going to bed when I checked and saw sterlins pics, now I guess I should hit the sack eh?

I will pray for your baby but I was waiting to see a pic before I go to bed lol should I wait or go! I soooo want her to make it for you coch!!
Probably, haha. It's about 10 pm for you, huh?

No need to wait. The pictures are 81% loaded and I'll put them up when they are completed. The membrane is moist and she's breathing and very active. I've assisted many times before so I have a good idea of what to do.

Thanks again for all of your advice, it has really helped me. Now get some rest! haha.

I'm still here! Now that I kinda know what I'm looking at seems like most of them aren't in the right position for hatching!!! Ugh!!! I patched up the end of the eggs and placed them back in bator! Just gonna let em be for now!

I have used it for about 12 assists if not more, the last batch of seramas we had couldnt hatch due to thick shells and I had to do ALL of them.

ummmmm my gut says no, and do you think the percent is high enough....

OZ is a nurse of some sort, he can help with this.......
I was wondering why you sent me a PM on this Sally

Sorry, I was out on a long chick delivery.

Theoretically it could be absorbed by thechick but it would be a small amount. With any medication or intervention, you have to weight the risk versus benefit and in this case, I would use it.

Hope that helps!!

Thank-you! That makes me a bit more confindent with the antibiotic ointment.

sterling you there yet?
we need to close those holes but first we have to note the yolk position and mark the egg and snap a pic so you know where that yolk is located so we can make the most educated guess as to where its beak is later on..... make sense? see the image below and note where the yolk would be in relation to its body and head? note dip in air cell as well? so if you can make your best guess by looking at your eggs and this pic draw a circle where you think its beak may be.... after you did all that, take a gauze pad and tape it over that hole that is open, doesnt have to be fancy, just close it up to air, you already have antibotic ointment on it so just stop the air to it. and then I would put her back into the incubator until tomorrow morning, if they dont have pips at the other end where you marked or any other place for that matter you can try to save them.... they are so late already I dont think you have anything to loose to be honest unfortunately I wish I could say otherwise, I also just had 4 malpositioned and didnt know it and didnt even get a chance to help them : (.

this is the assist https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching

IF YOU DON’T FIND its beak/eye/wing from the air cell end or see a yellow/orange sack DO NOT break the membrane! I HATE HAVING TO DO THIS STEP AND depending on egg cost I WONT EVEN TRY AN ASSIST! It is Hard understand and find how a chick is positioned! IF YOU CANT FIND ITS BEAK, you can make a guess as to where you think it is after refering to that link and its pictures on malpositions, and carefully chip ONLY OUTER EGG Shell away at the guess area. (Example: If you see the butt or yolk sack when you took the air cell end off, you have the bottom of the chick, you will refer to the link with malposition pictures and take a guess at how the chick is situated at the other end or SIDE of the egg) The membrane will often be brown where the beak is trying to break through. If your lucky and find its beak, create an air hole there so the chick can breathe and if you didn’t find it DO NOT open the membrane, refer back to the position ANATOMY pics and try another spot and keep trying! As LONG as your only taking the Shell off and not causing blood loss and NOT disrupting and inner membrane your ok! ITS HARD to figure out a position and I am finding alot of times their head is tucked in the middle of the egg between butt and feet! After you found its beak establish clear beak for breathing, let the chick rest until the blood vessels recede, follow instructions for assisted hatch above from this point on. WAIT WAIT WAIT! Oh and WAIT SOME MORE!

X2 on this. The last of my 5 chicks was malpositioned. I made a little hole in the fat end after candling (couldn't see a thing) and found it's leg. So I worked my way across the egg to opposite side, just breaking the shell and moistening the membrane as I went and eventually found it's beak and freed that. By this time I had about 1/3 of the shell off, so I kept wetting it and left it in the incubator for about 7-8 hours. The chick was quite happy once I had it's beak clear, but I freed it's one leg at one point, so it's more comfortable. That little thing was so twisted up in there, it's hard to explain. There wasn't a lot of blood still in the membrane, but I couldn't see the yolk, so I was playing it safe and left it for a few hours. I eventually removed the membrane and helped the chick out of the shell, after checking for blood etc, cleaned it up (it was covered in gunk) and put it back in the incubator for awhile. The next morning it was completely fine.

The way I did it was risky and trust me, I was worried about that little one, especially with all that gunk in the egg. But it worked out o.k. I am kicking myself for not charging the camera so I could take pics of that though

It was by far the most unusual assist I've ever done.
