I have been following this thread as a lurker for a few days. I'm praying for the babies!!!

This is my first hatch and I'm on Day 10. I just candled and can see 11 out of 17 eggs (these were shipped eggs from Montana to FL-I'm impressed) are still developing. The others are dark eggs so no looking inside. My question is how do I know if the eggs is bad/about to explode/etc? Will it start smelling when I sniff it? I know it will after it explodes

but I want to prevent it from getting to that point.
Welcome, and good luck! I don't think at this day they would start to stink yet/explode soon.

I just get frustrated sometimes and I know almost everyone I help its their first time and I paniced just like everyone else at first. I feel a little better watching the Sally Sunshine video posted in the Easter hatchalong, made me laugh as I never heard of it before and I aint no ghetto girl! LOL

Studies also show that cooling helps prior to day 18 (I posted a summary of an article you may not have read a few pages back). This is when a drop in temp will effect bowel formation - and may be why some chicks don't absorb the yolk properly

Good morning and hi to everyone!
I wanted to introduce myself here. I live in Michigan. Just got back into chickens last year after not having any for about 20 years. I recently bought an incubator and thought I would join in the fun all of you seem to be having.
I had hatched some eggs a long time ago always with low hatch rates.
I have been reading and learning a lot from you folks. Hopefully if I have any problems I will have already read how you dealt with them. I have also been reading the 'hatching 101'. Thanks Sally! Tons of information. If you don't mind I will just keep reading and learning, not usually one to say much. Will let you know when I get eggs set. Not for awhile, still too cold here.
Hello!

well it cant be much because the air cells are small so you should be ok.... when are you going to candle and pencil mark to see if they lost more?
Umm, tonight. Why should I candle them and mark the air cells? Wouldn't it be better to just leave them in the incubator?

Ok, he was really pushing and he managed to get his head out which allowed me to look in the egg. It looks like he ruptured his yolk sac.

Also, he doesn't look ready to hatch even though his head it out.

What can I do? I need to leave for class soon..
