Guys, I still don't have any external pips. It's nearing the end of day 20. Tomorrow hatch day starts at 7 in the morning, and I reallllly hope I have at least one peeper by morning.

Day 21 is an ESTIMATE 3D but I hope you do too! LOL

Sally, here are some pictures of her navel. Any recommendations? I was thinking about taking another piece of string and trying to tie off the back object. The black part isn't hard because I keep putting on antibiotics, but I'm worried that she'll get an infection if I stop using the ointment since her navel is still open.

Also, here's my baby all cute and fluffy.

I would let it fall off itself, I cant see too good but it doesnt look red infection like or green does it?

I'm so sorry Sally. I couldn't cull my flock, it'd be desvistating... Hopefully it won't come to that. Like Oz said, you have saved the lives of many chicks that others would have culled.

Sorry about all the questions, but another one came up. I'll post it in the disease thread if you guys don't know the answer. I was out with my chicks and watched one take a big crap when I saw blood! Right away coccidiosis came to my mind. The chicks were started on medicated feed, but when I reiceved the ducklings 3 weeks ago, I switched everyone to non-medicated feed. I started raising the chicks with the ducklings 1 week ago and yes, conditions were wet. The ducklings get water everywhere but I was made sure that there was dry areas.

Wet ground + non-medicated feed + bloody poop = coccidiosis?

I tried researching, and I still am, but I'm lost. None have died, they look healthy and they are eating and drinking well. The only symptom is the bloody poop. Also, I'm not so sure about cures. Has anyone delt with this before? If I switched back to medicated feed today, could that help cure them? Or won't it make a difference now that they have it.

This is Cocci. You need to get Corid for the sick chicks and not sure the ducklings can have it. So separate chicks and ducks. Corid 9.6% solution 9.5ml per gallon of water or Corid 20% powder 1/2tsp per gallon of water. Once they are sick with it Medicated feed is not enough. I just went thru this a couple months ago with some older chicks.

You are shooting for hatching on day 21. i bet you will get some action tonight.

I had similar panic when my teenage chicken had similar symptomsBernie got hold of something that I still dont know and gave it to them. I followed up with a round of amoxycillen in their water for 5 days. They have now been vaccinated for NCD. I will show bernie how to vaccinate for fowl pox and marek's when I get back in a month. Once my new batch hatch and catch up with the vaccines, I will give them Coryza (Haemophilus Paragallinarum Bacterin) vaccination as well - but they need to be 8 weeks old.I am also going to vaccinate for Mycoplasma Gallisepticum Bacterin. These vaccinations arent cheap but once I get over a 100 birds, I think the losses will be devastating if I dont.

Wow that's a lot of vaccines. I apparently need to do some reading.

I think it looks good. You might need to stop using the ointment so that it can dry and fall off. Just keep her brooder super clean. And she is so cute.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I cleaned the hatcher, no lockdowns until next tues or wed I think!! She added button quail eggs to it last night, they were shipped so we will see what happens, I threw all the quail eggs out from these birds, I am positive they are all hens, go figure! cute little stinkers!!

The white papers say having 4 - 40 birds does not really justify the cost of vaccines - but of course the cost of the birds also includes emotional cost that is not measure in a white paper. My final flock will probably sit at between 75 and 100 adult birds. The cost of all the vaccines will be about 300 if you factor in the boosters.. at 3 bucks a breeder bird its worth it.

Since you hatch from shipped eggs you know how expensive the bird can get. My cost for the bird alone are worth the cost of vaccine. Add in all that I have spent on feed and coops and everything else. I think vaccines are worth it. I didn't realize there were so many available for chickens.
