Like I said, I still have the chicken in which it never healed. Her name is Charlie and she's 3 years old. Other than the fact that she has a bum leg, she's perfectly healthy and gets around fine.

Could you take more pictures of her hock? I think the reason Charlie's leg never healed was because I wasn't finding the tendon correctly. I will try to walk you through it. Look her good leg and the legs of the other chicks. (I'm currently looking at my goslings leg for a description and I'm pretty sure a chick leg is very similar) Look at the outsides of their legs. There should be a little 'bump' of a tendon running down their hocks and legs. Then look at her bad leg. If the tendon is still slipped, than it will appear flat and swollen. The tendon has slipped to the side of her leg. When you pull the leg back, use your fingers to gently massge the tendon upwards. Don't be afaird to pull the leg back, if you are worried about pulling too far, grab a healthy chick and see how far it's leg can go back comfortably. You can usually pull it until it's perfectly straight. It will be somewhat difficult to get her leg straight because of the slipped tendon, but not impossible. It will hurt her, she will be in pain, but it's better than a life long deformity. Hopefully you will see and feel the tendon coming into place.

Once you get the tendon in place, just brace her leg so that it's immobile and straight. Once she gets the hang of walking with it (she will eventually) she can be placed with the other chicks.

Sounds like she's starting to imprint on you. It's not very common with chicks and I love when it happens. Don't give up on her.
Yeah she's totally imprinting. Hopefully after all this she really is a SHE.

Is the slipped tendon usually on the inside or outside? or can it be either? She's got all these feathers on her hocks so it's really hard to see anything, I can try getting her legs wet again to see better. I'll let you know what happens.

I know what you mean. All 4 of the chicks with slipped tendons were cochins. I just love my cochins.

I don't remember if the tendons slipped in or out. When massaging to help put the tendon back in place, pull up on both sides. It's nearly midnight here, so I'd better go to bed. I wish you and your little chick the best of luck!

Good night!
Thank you, I splinted her leg straight again, this time differently. I still don't feel a tendon, but maybe I'm not manipulating it enough, I don't want to break her leg. Keeping her separate for the night and we shall see what the morning brings.

the navel pic looks like its better, just weird in color! also chicks do fall asleep when you put them on their backs, so do my big chickens lol
she sounds very weak, I think you should check into some electrolites, I dont know how to make it homemade other than pedilite use.

ANYONE how to make homemade electrolites, a recipe/s please and I can add them to the articles as well so we can grab them anytime!
Actually, I called the vet college, and they took him in and are giving him medication. They said last night that he probably won't make it through the night, but they called this morning to say that he is alive, and later the actual "exotic and wild birds" specialist is going to examine him and call us and tell us what will happen next. And my goodness it is expensive! She said that birds don't usually live through this kind of bacteria infection or whatever, but that is probably because most people don't take them to the vet! XD I really hope he makes it.

I am waiting for the call.

BROODY! A day late and dollar short!

I went to close everyone up and my Black Cochin, Black Betty wouldnt get off the eggs! I picked her up and set her on the ground and I swear she puffed up and growled at me in broody position! I took the eggs from the nest and she ran squawkin to me all upset so I put one egg back and she went right on in there with a harumfffffff and rolled that sucker right back under her and tucked her head in her wing for the night! so I gave the rest back and about 6 more from the layer coop! That should keep her busy! BAD timing though, were was she Sat when I needed her to set for the hatchalong!

At this point, do you sometime not see movement on Day 18 candling? Up until today I had movement in thirteen eggs (out of eighteen originally) but tonight I see movement in about five ( some others are too dark to see anything except veining).
yuppers! normal!
