Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

UPDATE

I have 4 swedish flower hen chicks in the bator

I lost one due to piping wrong end and died. I have a second that pipped wrong end but breathing through its hole. 3 more just hanging out not pipped but I am not opening it. The single brahma egg that shared that bator is zipping. The Salmon Favs have not made their run for it. Its day 20 only.

The second bator eggs - Golden Campines and brahmas -- the bator that cooled for >5 hrs have yet to pip.

I spent the afternoon watching someones heart valve being replaced. I fired someone, I hired another. The circle of life.
What do you do for work? If you don't mind me asking

Well I knew I'd need to ask a question here at some point :) I put eggs in lock down on the 20th all were wiggling and looked great 4 shipped silkie eggs & 11 of my own . I started getting pips yesterday and as of a few hours ago 8 of mine had hatched . Since I had no more with pips I quickly candled them my last 3 looked alive and well but the silkies didn't look right they didn't have any veining and not a hint of movement so I made a pip and surprise dead chick . Opened 2 more to see the same thing dead chicks . They looked full grown and healthy but covered in a thick clear slime ? Any ideas what caused the slime I've never seen any thing quite like it before ( And I've had a lot of horrible hatches )Chick number 4 had internally pipped but thanks to his funny shaped air cell couldn't reach the outside he wasn't covered in slime like the other 3 .These eggs were older when I got them and then managed to lose weigh more weight than they should have (19%) while my own eggs stayed right on track . Could excess weight loss cause them to slime up ?
The no veining part is how my duck eggs who's hatch day was yesterday look like but when I candled them all 3 would move when I tapped on the shell. Is that why then start to pip & hatch because their egg environment starts to die?

NAG NAG LOL

here is the mod I made to the Farm Innovators killa bator after i fried the first eggs in it. I hated the thermostat.

I had to give the chick that pipped the wrong end a bigger breathing hole so I honored Sally;s demand while I was there, Cute little swedish flower hens

Oh I see, fun fun. I work in nutrition in a hospital. But my first job is mama

Honestly I'm not sure my other 3 still have veining in them and usually when I've candled one that's internally pipped you can still see some veins . These guys just looked different hard to explain wish I had taken a picture of them .

Sign: Not pipped. Full-term embryo, large yolk sac; yolk sac may not be fully enclosed by abdominal wall, may have residual albumen. Causes:
  1. Inadequate turning, resulting in decreased embryonic membrane development and nutrient absorption.
  2. Humidity too high during incubation or after transfer.
  3. Incubator temperature too low.
  4. Hatcher temperature too high.
  5. Eggs chilled (e.g., at transfer).
  6. Nutritional deficiencies.
  7. Heredity.
  8. Embryological development accident.
  9. Breeder diseases.
  10. Inadequate ventilation.
  11. Prolonged egg storage.
Ok I finally stopped being lazy and did my research lol . I know I must have had some temperature spikes as my eggs hatched early but I would have expected to lose a few of my own eggs as well . But then chilled is also a possibility as they were shipped ( would explain why it only happened to these eggs and not my own ) And prolonged egg storage could also be possible ( they were all dated the oldest was at 10 days when they went in the incubator ) ah so confusing .

Sally hope Halo's doing better .
And congrats Ozexpat on your new chicks !

12 CHICKS OUT! Hatch complete until EASTER LOCKDOWN! Not bad at all for shipped little eggs!

NOW TO let everyone know what I did different with these eggs......

I didnt settle at all, I candled and set them upright in a carton in the bator and turned in a carton right off the bat, YES I DID! 45 degree angle one end of carton flip to other 3x day.
Didnt touch them until day 7 candle, all the air cells were stable but odd so I laid them all in the bator and turned 3x day. 1 early death, 1 dead at lockdown.

Do I suggest this? NOT WITH expensive eggs, until we know for sure its the method..... I will try this again and if I get another batch of shipped eggs, even though I dont see that anytime soon. SO DONT DO THIS AND FAIL AT HATCH AND BLAME ME OK?
