I had a good update post going and then DH had to use the computer.... So not related to update.... But can any if you tell if an egg is fertile by the heat it emits? I might be a loon.... No I am sure I am! But I was candling my dark eggs since my hatch looked over Annnd I swear I can feel a difference. Anyone? Thought it might be fun to see.

We are on day 19 with shipped serama eggs and two of my silkies. I got the humidity up to 64ish. I used the wet rag trick. I have no action to report, but since its only day 19, I'm NOT going to let myself worry yet.

Annnd here was the update....
Woohoo!

That little thing is a serious zipper!
I mean, it really was! My last guy that had to be helped took over 36 hours I think. This one pulled it off alone in 17hrs! And you should see the shell... in a million pieces!

Well I think my hatch is done and we have not even hit day 21. None of the Oliver eggers have done a thing, but the other five barnyards have hatched!! Finally I put 5 in and got 5 out! The Oliver eggers were at least 10 days old but I had to try. My final batch is due next Friday. I will report back when I get home later with pics!

Have you candled them. Don't call it done without candling. You might have a stragler.

I did. They are so dark you can't even see an air cell in some of them. 2 were clear duds, I shined a light in the small end and there was way too much space.(they were my light olive ones) and 2 retained a lot of heat (see theory above) so I am keeping em all in until Saturday. I have a staggered hatch going on so I would like to get my 2nd set, which I think are better eggs, back in their turners before they have to lock down.

PS Sooner, I'm from Duncan Oklahoma originally. And most of my family is from Altus and Stillwater. Where abouts are you at in OK?

I live in Oologah which is north of Tulsa.

fellow Okie! Where do you live now? Dark eggs make it even more of a guessing game. I saw your thought on the temp. I know chicks in the egg start emitting their own heat around day 10-12 maybe. Don't hold me to that. Somepeople even compensate for this and lower the temp in their bator. So going on that information it maybe possible for an egg with a chick to register a little warmer than an infertile. I might check that theory in about 12 days with my own eggs. I have a temporal thermometer that I have for the kids and it actually works pretty well on eggs too. Interesting thought.

Honestly, I believe so. It may just be me just making things up, but the eggs that aren't developing seem to feel cooler to the touch. I once read an article about a hatchery using heat sensors to pull out infertile eggs.

A couple of months ago, I ended up in a debate about this and even though I provided evidence supporting my theory, the other guy also had evidence to disprove my theory. We never came to a conclusion. I'm going to try to search for that article...

Embryos are able to produce their own heat starting from day 1, but it's not noticeable until days 12 - 15. When I was using a still air incubator, I usually had to turn the heating element down a bit because the temperatures were rising around that time.

I actually have a pretty amazing story which involves an embryo producing it's own heat.

It's a long story, but here's the quick version. I found an egg on the ground in the coop. It was somewhat near a broody, but not very. I took it inside and set it on the kitchen table. I forgot about it and we went camping for the weekend. It sat on the table at room temperature for 3 days and 2 nights. I found it when we got back and it crossed my mind that maybe I should candle it. I decided not to, because even if there was an embryo, it had to be dead by now, right? Nope. I took the egg outside, and with the first crack, blood started pouring. I instantly felt horrible, but it was bad enough that I knew there was nothing that I could do. I continued opening the egg and there was an 17 or 18 day old embryo. The baby looked up at me and tried to peep before passing away in my hand. It was horribly sad.

So it's a very sad story, but the amazing part is that he survived 3 days at room temperature by producing his own body heat.

I received 12 shipped snowy call eggs and 1 broke so I put one under my broody (only room for the 1) and set the other 10 in the bator. I candled today and only 3 have growth the other 7 are clear. It's only day 5 so how long should I wait? This is the 2nd time I've ever dealt with shipped eggs and they were off of eBay so do I check for fertility and see of he will replace them? How do I go about doing this? I'm so bummed!
but on a happy note all but one of my shipped trout runner eggs have serious growth!!!
