How do you like sand in the brooder? I am thinking about trying it this time. speaking of brooder I guess I should think about getting one set up...

I really like it. Makes it really easy to clean up after them. I'm glad I went big. They've got half of it right now, 4x4 for 3 chicks, and it's amazing how much of a mess they make. For the first day, until they learned where the food was, to keep them from filling up on sand, I covered the common areas around the heat with new white shop rags. If you can swing it, go for it. Mine's just a frame made of cheap 1x4's covered in chloroplast on the inside for easy cleaning. I made a slot in the middle so I can add or remove a divider, and strapped a tarp underneath the whole thing to keep the sand contained. When I'm done, I can just shop vac it out, wipe it all down, and start over. Took 5 bags of sand to give me about 2" deep in the 4x8 space. Walls are 3' high and I have netting across the top to keep them in. I've got less than $100 in the whole thing.

Sumi, my only complaint is that they are incredibly messy. If I were able to free range them all day every day, I would love them. Mine are in a coop most days and it's incredibly messy. Water, muck, moldy hay, and poop everywhere no matter how often I change it.

As far as personalities, I believe it's how you raise them. My first batch of ducks ended up being a bunch of lunatics, but my little white Indian runner duck Aflack is a total sweet heart. Aflack got more attention and he now runs up to me every time I got out there. If I sit down, he will sit down next to me and stare at me until I agree to pet him. He's a very sweet duck and I will never give him up.

I love the runners. They're so goofy looking they're cute. Do they lay well? I keep hearing about how awesome they are for baked goods, and I do love to bake.

Yup! I love the Sebastopol geese. They are absolutely gorgeous and Goosey is my little sweetheart.

Score! Those things make great incubators. I'm working on making one right now out of a caterer's proofing box. Had one a few years ago and miss it.

I have some ideas for using a linear actuator (the thing that they use to raise and lower a tonneau cover on a pick up) to make an auro turner for a cabinet like that.

I would also have something like a vent pipe to distribute an circulate the heat.

Before anyone gets offended, that was a dig on myself, not anyone here. I'm actually pretty proud of my Appalachian heritage. Sad, though, that my legs are evening out after this time spent out on the prairie.

Good luck with the build, Doug. No experience with that thermostat module, but hopefully it'll be big enough to get the job done in that big a space for you. I put two fans in mine behind a false wall in the back, along with the heat source.

Oz, you'll have to share the auto turner making process. Sounds like a very interesting idea.

Yay little upside down weirdo chick made it! i think i got like three hours sleep last night, at least now i can end the other chicks love affair with his own reflection, cant be good for his mental health
