Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

A sad day in the getting the flock out of here adventure. Our cotournix hatch failed,

I had an issue with the hovabator spiking just after I set the eggs, I figured that may have killed them but I was not giving up. They went into lockdown and on day 17 there were 4 pips. When Bernie wend back to the bator it was at 104. The eggs that survived the first spike were killed 17 days later by a second.

We live and learn. I am converting every bator to use the STC-1000 ebay digital thermostat. This will make them behave just like the HB Genesis 1588 I have here in SoCal. I have a farm innovators bator here I converted and I have 33 of 41 shipped eggs in that bator still developing on day 12. A $17 upgrade that will give me peace of mind when I remote incubate.

I feel sad for Mrs Oz because she wanted Corournix but I will push on and try again with 120 texas A&M eggs in mid May. Mrs Oz will take them and some chicken eggs - we can do candling lessons on them when I get there a week later with a good batch of guineas, turkeys peafowl and of course, gallus domesticus.

On a bright note, its Bernies 29th birthday. Party tomorrow. Pics by Thursday. The 182 chicken eggs in the display case bator are in lock down. Temps have been a tock solid 99.5. No candling but no stinkers.

I am so sorry to hear this, I would have supported you 100%, I was figuring something was up that you didn't post, but I didnt want to push, you have made the right decision even though it was hard. I pray the next little ones hatch perfectly for you.

You may not realize but you have helped others with your contraption for sure!  May I add a link to your images and story to the Hatching 101 article (if I can find it on this thread LOL)  So she lives on to help other chicks that need therapy!

Thanks Sally! That would mean a lot to me...

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that, Oz

What a bummer. Hopefully the next hatch will be a 100% and make up for this disappointment.

Wish Bernie "Happy birthday" from me?

jfer until Marty answers, this is hard decision, its sorta like answering "what number should humidity be at?"
what you can do is follow the assist article in the morning and create a tiny view hole to investigate, but I am praying they are popping out for you by then!
Ok...I woke up with about 8 babies in there!!!!!!!!

Congrats on the babies! Wonderful start to the day, hey? If it's been 24 hours since the Silkie pipped and she hasn't made progress you can investigate by chipping away a bit of the shell. Take a pair of tweezers and break off small pieces, but be careful and work slowly, so you don't nick the inner membrane. Dampen the inner membrane with a wet q-tip (I use clean water) and check the vein situation. If the membrane is clear you can continue chipping away the shell, but don't remove the membrane until you checked the chick's belly area. I did an assist recently and the membrane was clear, but I found a little blood in the veins by the chick's navel still. Once that is clear you can remove enough of the membrane to let the chick complete the hatch. I found once they got their heads clear they're more motivated to get out and once they got a leg free they're fine and will wiggle out of what's left of the egg by themselves.

It's not looking good. I see no movement and not hearing peeps. I changed batteries in my candler and candled a few. I closed the lid back down.

I'm hearing peeps in day 19 bator.

what did you find while candling Doug?
Little chicky that I bathed this morning and put the Betadine on the navel is doing great. I had 19 out of 22 eggs hatch. This is the same bator that had the ducks hatch 4 days early. So I feel very fortunate.

On another note, I have some very expensive shipped eggs on day 20 and no pips. I have another set on day 19.

awesome!!

I see chicks but no movement that I can tell. No idea why. It's day 21. Doesn't look like I'm getting anything from that bator. That's 100 dollars worth of eggs. I found several more that never did anything. I doubt I ever buy anymore shipped eggs. I've not got even one to hatch. I have some more coming that I already paid for. I did everything by the book. The only way I would ever do it again is overnighted.

I made the difficult decision to cull her this afternoon...

She just wasn't getting any better. Her legs just wouldn't stay in the right position. Even if I held her legs, she would throw herself forward. As soon as I would put her down, she would spin in circles with one leg up above her head, straight out. I felt so bad for her. She would eat and drink when I would hold the food and water for her, but it was obvious by now she wasn't growing like the other two. Today, she was cheeping almost constantly... I talked to my friend who I was going to give her to, and we both decided it was for the best. I have to leave town at 4AM tomorrow and be gone until late in the evening, so I wouldn't have been able to take care of her. And my friend didn't want her little boy to get attached and then have the heartbreak of losing her... I think she had problems from the start. I don't think her legs had problems because she was stuck in the shell, I think she was stuck in the shell because her legs had problems... Poor baby girl...

I have more hatching today... 3 out of 7 out already! Nothing like new babies to ease the pain a bit...

Thanks for all of the help and advice. It does make the journey easier when I have so many wonderful chicken lovers to share it with...
