Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

Put my 24 eggs into lock down! One has cracked the shell already. Not a full pip but started. 2 of them not sure if they made it all the way. But we'll see. The air cells seem a bit on the big side. Maybe not locking them down soon enough. Maybe a day late. There due to hatch @ 6am Thursday. So maybe I should be locking them down @ 6am Monday instead of today which is Tuesday. I don't know LOL. Seen 1 or 2 rockin, even though last hatch really never seen one rock until they started to pip. So I take that as a good thing. They probably already turned to were they want to be.

Now the staring starts. HAHAHAHHA

I promised myself I won't do that. But already not working.

NO questions are stupid, ok some are, but that WAS not!   so you gonna do the suggested homework?  No tests please!  

The home work has been on going Sally , I have been reading everything I can get my hands on as far as mechanical incubation this has been a year long project . I have been breeding and hatching for a few years old school , my decision to use mechanical incubation has been well thought out. my current Breeding program and expansion of my flock here has forced me to go to a more controlled and at will method of propagation . That being said, yes required home work and any tips tricks and guidance from my friends here at byc will be adhered to and appreciated ..

REMEMBER this is the HOT WATER, NO STRAIN method! instead of all that water on top, it settles at the bottom because of the "loaf" on top! so the bottom of the feed will always be wetter than the top and hold all those good brewing juices!

Sounds good to me. I'm not hard to please.

No, I did. But didn't do it in the room I normally do it in. So it was sort of hard to see in here. I didn't put the X's on them though. I wanted to get them in there quick as possible because of the one pip.And get the humidity up. This homemade bator is hard to raise it up a lot. I like to get it to 55% during lock down. Plus as soon as one or two hatch's all the eggs will be rolling all over the place so I didn't see the point really.

Sometimes I have to learn things on my own.

Still not really sure what to look for for internal pips. I did see heads moving in some in the air cell. So I guess yes to that. Some where so full I didn't see anything going on. Pretty much just how last time worked.

During the first 19 days I just use a pie pan mostly covered up with foil. I keep it at 37%. Then at lock down I remove the pie pan put a 13x9 pan full of water on the bottom, put another shelf on top and place a 9x9 pan full of water, plus a mason jar full of water on the bottom. LOL This bator is made of plywood, I think it really soaks up the humidity in there. Going to paint the inside one day so I doesn't do that. And with all that it is still only at 52%. But I am doing the dry method. Works for this bator since I have a hard time getting the humidity up.

I guess maybe I also didn't take in to consideration that have have 24 eggs in there not just 9 like last time. Maybe that's why the air cells look a bit big. Maybe with that many eggs it could have been higher. Even though a lot of times it did go up to 41% because of the outside humidity levels. When there high I can open the window and let the outside air in and the fan in the bator will draw that in and raise the humidity level up 3-4%.

Okay Sally, I finally found a spare moment to upload pictures. I had seven hatch and five that didn't. The first is a picture of the non-hatchers which seem to have a range of issues (they were all shipped eggs). The second is my picture of happy cuteness. Of course, I have added three white midgette turkey poults since I snapped it (thanks to the link on turkey incubation that you sent me).


one was really, really wet and upside-down, two were shrink wrapped and two were just dead, no idea why.


The ones that hatched- Six ameraucanas and one silver laced wyandotte bantam.
