sally has 2 days of hatching going on - what a surprise !!

and has a duckling hatched and drying !!

rennerae shared another cute picture with us (post 14231)

sally shared her hatchlings with us ..except the buttons hope they hatch for her !!! ... oh and was so busted about the turkeys by DH lol (post 14234)

and she asked advice on the best way to blow out eggs (wax uses a 20cc 16ga needle from tsc and drills the hole with a diamond dust cone bit ... for those who are curious)
doug still has those pretty goslings going - and what do you know the thing on their head is hard... for those who are curious and want to know ..did the other two hatch yet ?!?
and he is having some wacko weather going on there in AR

sally was wondering about medicated chick feed for the baby turkeys...most agreed it was at least safe short term anyway

i do believe toast n jelly wants some eggs from prnzsbuttrcluck...
and she is willing to slip them across the border and sit on the bench with the rest of the hardened criminals lol

gardeningmama's fav movies are The Breakfast CLub (another awesome one) and St. Elmo's Fire
the humidity was all better when she got up but it took 5 containers and 2 rags
and she is officially a worry wart !!!
(and yes i think we all have bird regret days)
she set april 12th and says phewie on her bator !!

TweetyNPetey - how long til that duck hatch ? can't wait to see pics !!
(and i would but the bird eggs in my bator too just to see what happens if the momma doesn't show back up - although from experience baby "wild" birds are not the easiest to raise)
and is in the midst of writing papers on horses and chicken diseases



sally boosted our spirits a bit with her cheering squad !! and shared more baby chick pics (post 14267)

tony agreed with renne that chicks like to share their poop lol and FINALLY got his dellies ( cute little buggars too !! pics on post 14276 - the green dots indicate breeding pens for those who noticed them )
he also picked up some ACV(apple cider vinegar) to try FF again
and is thinking he might have a hen with a broken toe
and he is up to about 70 chickens now plus 12 in the bator that he will let us know on tommorows candle for day 7

my4ladies stopped by she was our day 11 water air cell lady (feel free to stop by and offer her ddvice - original post is 14295)

back to doug he has hatches coming on the 7th,11th,13th,14th,16th, and 19th. some of those are in his new soda pop bator and i am sure we are all interested to see how those turn out !! on no soda bator is broken (like flo-bot)

cochins got her chicks today and is in love !! and promised us pictures (hopefully i find them as i catch up !! and a picture updated on cute little gos too we hope! )

there was an interesting discussion over several pages about medicated vs. nonmedicated food and about cocci .. tony is researching on this some for everyone

doug learned he can breed glw's to glw's to get glws
and he lost his garden from the last cold spell
tony's garden however seems to be doing ok
and chicksooner is working on a garden too - come snow or sun

toast n jelly suggested a stay home to prevent arrest lol

rbaker admired oz's beautiful family !! and suggested not giving antis every day

sally was heading to bator watch but is prob already back as i am typing this .. or gone to bed lol

bush is worried about her day 6 eggs and is gonna candle again tonight and give us an update (general consensus is they are probably ok)

sally has ancona's already wanting to hatch and still waiting on those buttons !!

poor tweety is down to one ducky now _ just caught up .. but will get it a pal if it hatches (my duck eggs were thick and managed to hatch so keep holding in there !! )

Well crap. The soda machine screwed up. The thermostat went out. Going to start over. Gotta get a new thermostat and hook everything up again.

I have a wafer thermostat. I love it. Very easy to control.

Sally, I know this sounds wierd but if you google it you will see that it is actually something people do and I can say that it works for me. I have 5 dogs and 4 adult hens. The hens were getting worms and I was getting sick of treating them and tossing eggs for several weeks. I was losing the fight to keep my dogs & chickens worm free. When my 16 year old beagle started showing symptoms of heart worms (coughing etc) I started looking into alternative ways to cure it because I didn't think he'd survive heart-worm treatment and honestly I couldn't really afford it. Well I found out that if you give them 1 oz of Guiness black label beer for every 25 lbs of weight it will kill off most kinds of worms. I was skeptical but thought it was worth a try so I started this about 11 months ago, treating them every other week for 6 weeks then monthly after that. My beagle stopped coughing and dry heaving etc and all dogs quit dragging their butts on my carpet and in the yard. Since it worked I decided to try it with my chickens, I add 1 oz to their 1 gallon waterer and don't add or change it out until its gone, I do this monthly. I've been doing this for 8 months and they haven't had worms since. Their eggs look just as yummy as always, no taste difference and no the chickens do not get drunk from it (neither do the dogs). I have had a 6 pack of Guiness Black Label for almost a year, I have 1 or 2 bottles left, and it probably cost about $10. I successfully treated 1 dog of heart worms and all of my dogs seem much healthier, my chickens haven't gotten worms since I started and I don't have to throw away eggs during treatment, it's great! I know I might catch some flack for treating my pets with beer but it really does work. I'm not sure about giving it to a pregnant or nursing dog but it might be worth looking in to. Hope it helps.

Yikes... I opened up the first goose egg that wasn't developing. I was going to leave it in the incubator, but there were suspicious dark spots on the air cell so I removed it.

As soon as I made the first crack in the air cell, the smell hit me. Definitely a bad egg. I looked closer and there was some white growth in the air cell. Some sort of mold or fungus which is definitely not a good sign.

Next step was to break the membrane. I knew that the yolk was ruptured before I even started. I didn't see any embryo, but it's possible that the egg died before day 3 because of whatever the mold/fungus growth is. I dumped the egg contents into a bag and both the yolk and egg white were mixed together and were very watery. I looked at the remaining shell and there was white growth spots on the membrane where the egg contents were.

I've got an incubator full of a some expensive eggs and some of the eggs aren't even mine. I really hope whatever happened to this egg won't happen to the rest...




I will add that I found this egg near the water dish wet and cold. Hopefully it was those circumstances that cause this to happen to the egg and this won't happen to the others.
