I drowned a chick. At 2 in the morning, still pretty drunk, and very tired, I thought I had about a day before the chicks would commit suicide. I don't have any sponges (I am getting some today) and I don't have marbles (no comment!). The water is out now except in the reservoirs and a bullion (chicken of course!) jar with a paper towel in it.
What is really awesome is that another chick made it out in the 4 hours I kept myself from looking. Man those things pip to zipped fast! All 3 were in a few hour's time!
The one that was pipping last night IS still alive. It began to zip, but stopped. I saw yellow. I guess it broke its yolk sack. I thought it was dead, and didn't feel too bad about it. Then I saw movement inside.

I think I saw an EE moving. The most amazing thing (as if this miracle weren't amazing enough) is that I wasn't expecting anything until Thursday due to the temps dipping low.

I'm sorry.

Congradulations on the chicks that you do have!

Hopefully if the rain holds out I can get the rest of the wire up on the roosters area. Going to be a temp hold for everybody until I get the hens side done. Need to get the 8 LBs out of the small area they are in. Move the 10 HRIRs and the 7 LH out of the growing pen so I can put the 6 Wyandottes in there. Then I'm putting the older PRIR roo back there too. So the poor hens can grow there feathers back. LOL They look like the crap. Getting jumped on too much. He won't like it. He's never been without them. But the way it's going to be. lol.

Maybe tomorrow I can get the wire. Then this week build the 6x6 house I'm building for the roos.

Hey Doug. How long you been raising GLW? I have those 6. I have a few that have the longest legs I have ever seen. They almost look like an ostrich.

Then I have one that has really no feathers at all. Some just coming from it's tail and just a few of the bottom wing feathers. It looks deformed. I guess from what I read the shorter winged birds are the roos. But again these feather and grow like no other breed I have every had so far.

I just started raising them. How old are those chicks? All of mine are feathered at 3 and 4 weeks.

No I didn't... If it happens again, I'll be sure to take pictures.

I don't have very much time for research (I need to study for finals) but so far, I haven't been able to find anything about mold or fungus growing INSIDE eggs.

when you candled did you see any porous holes or any slight cracks? also was the air cell larger than the other egg you had in? I have a feeling it was somewhere open even tiny spot
