Sevin dust. It's used "off label" for poultry, but it's still the best. Neem oil is great for keeping bugs away. I used it in my vegetable garden and it really worked. It just smells awful and you must be careful, don't breathe in the fumes when you use it. It won't kill you, but it won't be fun either :) Another organic method of mite control that I've heard of but haven't tried yet is garlic and diluted garlic oil. Feed the hens crushed garlic and apply the diluted oil directly to their skins. I don't know how well it works, but it won't do them any harm, so give it a try? And... give your hens a bath. Tick and flea shampoo, warm water. Good luck!

I have some Neem oil. Bought it to kill aphids on my rose bushes. Didn't do anything. But will try that. Organic is good but I don't care. I will use nukes if that's what it takes. LOL Bathing them!!!

That's if I can even catch them. That would take 3 days. LOL.

The neem works as an insect repellent. I bought some to keep bugs from stinging my pumpkins and it really worked. We sprayed it once and had one or 2 stings as apposed to the 100's we normally got. Dilute some dishwash soap and spray that on your aphids.

Well, Sevin, as I said is great. And bathing them I hear, helps a lot too. You know you can always wait until they go sleep and just pick them off the roosts

We used to buy this type of mite/flea dust in SA that we'd pour in a plastic bag, then we put the chicken, one by one, in the bag and shook it. Ended up with a flock of snow white, slightly ticked off chickens, but it took care of the bugs!

My big girls have MITES!!!!

I had a big feeder station out there and 4 of them started to roost under it at night. So last night I went out after dark and put them back on there roost in the hen house. I came back in and felt things crawling all over me!

They were ever where. Took a shower and had to wash my clothes but still think there on the couch were I was sitting when I first came in. I was reading on them, they seem to be birds specific. Will the ones I brought in from outside just die off?? I hope they wont get all over the cats. My wife will divorce me!!

And I was reading on how to get read of them. I know the sevn dust works in the coop. Neem oil for the roosting poles they said. Read that wood ash will kill mites also. I also found an old post tthey were saying to use an Ortho Home Defense MAX No-Pest Strip in the coop. They said within days they will be all gone.

Any suggestions??? Now I know why they are not laying very well.

I guess I have to treat the coops with sevn and get some of the wood ash out of my barrel and burn some more wood and shovel it in there dusting spots.
