Ok I was herring chirping the other day from the small 3 egg incubators but haven't herd anything in some time all overdue did the float test low floaters but no movement I'm getting so stressed I also candled them and could actually see the beak open but no movement tapping ain't getting anything how many days should they be overdue before I let go

you can make a tiny hole in the shell to see what is going on. You will make it in the big aircell end. The shell is usually tough to get thru and then there will be a shell membrane. You can go thru that but do not touch the inner membrane that is around the chick. How overdue are they? and are you sure your temp was accurate?

I have one chick that just hatched from my spiked temp hatch of 30 eggs and I feel that is all I will get. I have some three week old chicks in the brooder. Can I put a wire barrier up so new chick can have company
but not be harmed by the older ones? Does it have to have company other than me and a feather duster? I have a separate brooder I could use.

I dont have any trouble with 3 week old chicks being with day old chicks.

Quote: Take a sharp, clean object and score an X over and over and over until you get through the shell, then use a pair of tweezers to remove bits of the shell and make the hole bigger. You'll see the inner membrane covering the chick. Take a wet Q-tip and carefully wipe that membrane to dampen it and check for movement from the chick. If the chick responds look for any visible blood vessels in the membrane. The blood vessels will be your clue as to how far along the yolk sac absorption is and how near ready the chick is to hatch.
