HELP Hope has a big gash in the top of her head and we can no longer afford to take her to emergency room. there is no skin left and I can see her skull which does not seem to be broken. My family keeps encouraging me she will live, but I am highly doubtful because I think she is just in shock and that is why she is acting normal. My mom is going to get some antibiotics for her, but I was wondering if I could give her some home painkillers aka: acetaminophen (sp) some way 'cause we are dirt poor. I really don't want my Hope to die, but it might happen anyway. I am barely typing right now. My mom said to clean it with ivory soap and water, but I want to know your opinions. Please help.

you owe it to yourself to try a couple of them hard boiled. they are silky creamy
Do they peel easier/better than fresh chicken eggs?

What happened to her? I don't know about chickens, but I know acetaminophen is a HUGE no no for dogs/cats...can kill them..

I have one egg almost completely zipped and at 5 pm tonight will be day 20. I've had the bator at 100 until a week and a half ago when I brought it up to 102. There is another external pip on another egg and I hear peeps from others. The one almost zipped is a SLW!!!! I hope everything is okay with it, I've really wanted this breed. I'm wondering if I should have bators at 100 but still manage to keep the humidity down. I'll see if these were just early hatchers and the others come out to play tomorrow. :)

Not sure. And we are taking her to the vet in a bit, hopefully it is not too expensive.
Hi 3D.

You probably dont need to take her to the vet. I know it may sound harsh but she is a chicken. Chickens, if they don't die immediately from injuries, tend to recover from things that would horrify you and I.

Give her first aid. Clean the wound with soap and water and then put some bacitracin on it for a few days then switch to tincture of iodine.

I agree with Oz and would add to put her in a quiet clean area where she can relax and rest without chance of others bothering her. Lots of clean cool fresh water and food. Maybe put some vitamin drops and electrolytes in her water if possible. Praying that what is best for Hope happens peacefully.

OK, so I broke out the super bright flashlight and just candled the 14 shipped Welsummer eggs (Day 8) and 5 were duds - 3 scrambled and 2 not fertile. But the others all look to be developing well so far. I candled all 24 of my barnyard mix (day 11) and 2 had blood rings (confirmed by eggtopsy) and 2 were non-fertile. When I say non-fertile I think that is the right term as there was no development at all. I numbered everyone and put theme back in leaving the corners empty as I've heard that is where there tends to be the most fluctuation in temps.

I've heard fathers to daughters and mothers to sons is best if inbreeding. But I'm still newer here. Do a search, I've read this here on BYC many times.
