If anyone is willing to take a look at this thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...uking-slime-warning-graphic-pic#post_11739610 My chick order came in the mail and I had 3 deaths. I am trying to determine breeds so I can properly report it. Sex, well I guess I will just have to get one more of each to be sure....

Well, I promised to tell you some of my funny chicken stories and since I'm no closer to hatching along with you all I guess I better had![]()
A few years ago, after a string of losses to a predator, I decided to move our remaining young chicks into our house, as it was the only truly safe place to keep them at the time. The youngsters quickly realised the benefits of living in our "coop" and one of their favourite pastimes was lying on the bed with my while I was reading or snoozing. One day as I was lying there a little rooster in the group (if I remember correctly there was 5 chicks) came and sat right by me. I wasn't paying it much attention, I was tired and did what we do when we're tired: I yawned. And since no-one but the chicks were there I did it very enthusiastically.... I yawned, shut my mouth and came closer to eating chicken than I did in years. While I had my mouth (wide) open and my eyes shut little rooster took the opportunity to have a closer look at my tonsils. He very nearly lost his head in the process. I was so startled I can't remember what happened in the few seconds after that horrible realisation that I had a chicken's head in my mouth, except that little rooster managed to escape unharmed, though he never quite trusted me again after that day...
Quote: I cant speak for everyone here, but i buy from both. If i want show birds, i will find someone on here and buy or trade to get what i want. If i cant find what im looking for in under 350 miles, i will order from hatcheries. Im constantly working for improvement so i order 10-15 straight run from 4 or 5 hatcheries. from these chicks i cull aggressively to get what i want.
if your just looking for some egg layers and not worried about show quality, hatcheries/feed stores works well. i do prefer to buy chicks i can see and not have them shipped, especially in colder weather.
