I've re-candled the clear eggs and saw something going on in there. No veins that I could see though. So I left them and candled again a few days ago. Half the eggs were dark, so I candled again last night and this time they are mostly dark, except for the air cells. The light I'm using is iffy, so I'm not 100% if they decided to start developing after all or if there is something unpleasant brewing in there, but their due date is this weekend, so I'll know then. Here's hoping we'll get a (pleasant) surprise. I'm not feeling terribly optimistic though!

shock horror

no salmonella issues in oz,

oh and i ate some npip eggs here once that missed a quick trip to the phils lol

they were not shipped correct? I haven't had any of my own eggs look dark unless there is life in there, only time I see somewhat dark and cloudy is with a rolling air celled egg or one that was scrambled in the postal system. If they were inferts they would be clear so I will take a guess that you will have chicks! when is lockdown? I cant forget to go do mine, I tend to ignore my eggs after day 12-14 I am egged out I think but my chicks seem to like the process go figure

Quote: Nope. We walked across the road from us to where there are some locals living in "informal housing". Some of them has small coops with a couple of chickens in them, so we asked from house to house. These eggs were in a nest box with a pile of other eggs (about 13 or 14 in total) in one guy's coop. He had 6-8 hens and a rooster in there as well, but I was more interested in the pen next door which had a mom hen and about 13 new chicks, so I just asked the guy if he'd sell me some of the eggs, hoping they'll be vaguely fresh still. Fertility should be good with that rooster/hen ratio and the chicks next door proved the rooster's doing his job. Their due date is this coming Sunday/Monday.

What throws me out here is that I cannot see any veins! I've candled them from this end to the other and nothing. But they are getting darker. I seriously need a better candling light before I do this again lol. The light I'm using now is lovely, but it's a pain to use for this.

I wish they had done a HEAT test on the eggs as well.... they say temperature of 35° to 40°F is best to store them, but I can put my eggs in the fridge that I plan to sell for hatching I don't have anywhere else to go that's cooler during the summer, I will start putting them in the garage now that its cooler outside and that way if the serama don't sell like this bunch I can eat them, I WILL NOT SET THEM I wont do it! I have given away chicks so cheap just to get rid of them, but I guess even a buck a chick is profit but not sure its worth the hassle, everyone that comes wants to see the big guys as you can see them coming in the drive and that leads to everyone else, and the talking begins and the time ticks away. DH blames it on me, I think he is wrong I try to do my chicken business fast when he is here. But with chickens there is always chatter I don't care who you are! It is what it is!

One thing I find fascinating was my sneaky broody hen, who would go lay her eggs somewhere, usually a fairly shady, sheltered spot and leave them there until she's collected a big enough clutch to sit on (12), by which time the oldest egg would be around 14-15 days old. And the temperatures fluctuated from quite hot during the day to quite chilly at night. She did this 3 times and had a 100% hatch every time. So it shows there is some wiggle room with temps and fresh eggs for hatching. I wish I knew what the temperatures were then.

Eating eggs are even more forgiving, if you don't mind losing quality. I used to work in a shop that sold eggs amongst other things and in Summer that place used to get so hot, my colleague and I would take turns to go sit in the cold store. The eggs were kept on a shelf in the shop, unrefrigerated, and as long as I was there no customers complained about buying off eggs from us. I used to grab a box for the kitchen now and then and though the eggs were stale as heck by the time we used them they were edible still.

Finally! They are "Red" chickens according to the lady we got them from, so we'll have to wait and see what comes out of here. But quite frankly, I don't care if they are purple, as long as they hatch

Maybe you could cross purple and red and make a new breed - Rooi-pers Sumihenne. Get Greenfire farms to import them and sell them for $500 a chick.

Good luck with your reds!

HAHAHA Sally that made me really laugh b/c any time i sell chicks or eggs we stand and talk quite a while about our flocks incubating etc.
I add drive time to CHAT time. when planning to meet a chicken person or if they come here...Gotta leave time for the sale AND the chitchat...(so fun)....Are we all like outer space aliens cant wait to see someone of our ilk and clom(is that a word?) together so we have someone who isnt falling asleep or rolling their eyes waiting for ONE intake of breath to change the subject... when we describe the newest sticky butt and speculate why?
On the Mo chat someone was gong tosell me some lemon cuckoo Orp chicks or eggs here in Mo...AND someone else was going would pick them up!!
Talk about gritting my teeth and saying NO!!BOY that wasSOO hard..still smarting...Like you no hatching in fall & WINTER this year!!!(WHAAAA!)
