Hello all! My poor pekin drake was bitten by a dog. He was bitten near his crop, which is why I think he doesn’t want to eat anything! He’s been to see the vets but they didn’t seem keen on trying to stich it, so we’re going to see how he goes. He’s on anti-inflammatories and anti-biotics.

The main thing I am worried about is his hesitancy to eat and drink. He only eats when I hand feed him peas, and he has refused anything else. I need him to eat more so that he heals quickly, does anyone have any suggestions? I’ve tried corn, seed, pellets, wet pellets, oats and honey, worms. Should i try electrolytes?? If anyone has any suggestions let me know! Should I invest in a poultry multi-vitamin liquid? He is a beautiful duck and I will do anything to help him survive!

I avoid stitching dog bites -- in humans as well as ducks -- as the bites are commonly infected. It's better that any infection can get out.

I do give injured ducks Pedialyte [preferably the colorless and flavorless preparation that I have only found at Walmart] with added Rooster Booster Poultry cell in the Pedialyte, in place of drinking water. You are doing good getting peas down your little guy. Keep offering treats. His appetite will come back as he gets better.

Keep us updated on progress

When my girl got attacked by a hawk, she ate nothing but worms and “soup” (blended feed, treats, and electrolytes, strained to remove any chunks) for about 1 week. Then, she suddenly ate a whole bunch of dry feed all at once. Your boy will get there.

I agree it’s very good that he’s eating peas. And to use electrolytes / soup in place of water. Good he has the medication, too.

I found a swedish blue hen in the middle of the road one day a dog had he I got her in my car and realized under her wing she had a wound so big I could see inside her I could see her leg bones her spine and neck it was a huge hole . I didn't know what to do so I got her home hisednit out and kept he in my bathroom and a week later she started to heal and 2 weeks went by and she was healed she did end up with a permanent limp but I've had her for 6 months now and just the other day I went outside and I found my male mallard but she was not there and she stays right by him can't find her in assuming a fox or bobcat got her which is strange cause my dog didn't bark and there was no sign of a struggle or blood or anything .now my male just sits all day looking for her standing in the drive way

Aww poor boy misses his girlfriend. Are you going to try to get another duck for your drake? Or get 2 or 3 girlfriends for him is best if you are able to.
