I have always seen it as a challenge to hatch 300 - at once!

I blame this entirely on you. LOL.

And besides its chicken math - you dont count pheasants quail guineas turkeys and ducks do you?
Yeah, yeah, blame me

If it comes out of an egg, it's a hatch. So they all count, yes. The more the merrier!

Of all your chicken breeds what one is your favorite

This is the list of breeds that I took over this trip. I actually like heritage Barred Rocks. The even stripes created by the feathers are amazing.

Next would be Red Laced Blue Wyandottes and Lemon Cuckoo Orpingtons.

I have some young Breds Fowl that look really nice as well.

In saying that, I do not have a pet type relationship with birds so their characteristics towards humans dont enter into it - just looks.

The 3 heritage barred rocks i hatched from the shipped eggs are so nice. Well, particularly the one I think is a male. He begs for attention, hops on your hand to get picked up if you try to do anything in the brooder. And when when my 2 day old bredas were inconsolably lonely I finally put him in with them and he immediately snuggled up and calmed them down. He also showed them how to eat and drink from the nipple waterer. Oh and in case you are wondering where the day old bredas came from since all 18 of my shipped eggs died - the nice local breeder i ran across on ebay had put some breda eggs up for auction and i won them. The day I was to pick them up they decided not to lay so she GAVE me 2 breda chicks to make up for it! Well - an instant 33% hatch rate, LOL! I'll take it :) Especially since I managed to crack one of the remaining eggs on the trip home somehow :'( I think it was one of the gnarly speedbumps by her house that I missed (or DIDN'T miss). I think I may put some wax on it and see how it does. I actually also considered a sticker?? The wax makes me nervous. What do you think would a sticker work?

So far I have 5 pips - a CCL, 2 BBS Ameraucana, one of my own olive eggers (if the daddy is who I think he is), and one of my own SBEL (again if the daddy is who I think he is). I've never kept any of my own hatched chicks so this will be sweet if they hatch well :)

i have never bothered. i ended up with 15 eggs cracking in my haul. half were wyandotte banties, 2 duck, 3 quail and the rest i cant remember. I figure a 2% breakage over a 7500 mile haul is pretty good.

I would use wax. Its proven.

Yeah, that is definitely good odds :) I will try the wax. Need to look up a tutorial first so I don't botch it.

So.. copying from my hatch-a-long :(

GAH!! What the heck??? knew someone just died in there when my temp suddenly dropped down to 99 :hit It was more than just one someone... :he 3 Partridge penedesencas dead in the shell at hatch. I snatched the ones that hadn't pipped out one at a time and candled them. No internal pip, no movement and they felt "cold" the way dead eggs feel. Poked a peek hole and confirmed they were dead. AGAIN with the horribly malpositioned chicks???!!! One with head down between thighs into the small end, one with both feet all the way over its head, and one that obviously stopped growing about day 10ish but it was so dark I couldn't tell. The other three had internally pipped or were trying to and I just made them a breathing hole so that at least if they were stuck they could keep breathing to absorb yolk and blood till they were ready to get out. At least one looks to be badly malpositioned too and I will be surprised if it makes it. It was trying to pip out the side and I actually had clear its beak for it but it was like it was already in the process of dying. It also had some blood near its beak so I think it pipped a vein when it tried to pip out the side. But I don't think it looked like a lot of blood - just afraid since its by the mouth it might be enough to suffocate it. And it doesn't want to keep its beak at the necessary angle to keep it cleared. I think its almost in there sideways. So I have those 3 (probably only 2 really) Partridge Penedesencas, 1 Crested Cream Legbar, 2 Blue/Black/Splash Ameraucana, 2 homegrown Olive Eggers, and 1 homegrown SBEL that are pipped and currently alive. Dead are 3 partridge penedesencas, 1 Splash Ameraucana, and one SBEL.

So I originally had 12 hand delivered eggs from a local breeder - only 6 are still alive. I had 4 of my own, and 3 are still alive. Its so frustrating seeing so many lives lost :th

And on the sick rooster front, my meds came this evening from amazon so will be giving them that tomorrow if I can. No one has gotten worse or died - the rooster and one hen still are coughing and shaking their head. She is not laying either which normally she lays really well so I know she isn't well (GLW hen). No chicks are showing any signs and there are occasional maybe coughs or sneezes or wierd sounds around the coop but never where I can see who did it or know for sure what it was. I think we're going to be OK.
