Okay, so I've had so many ideas about Tweet's coop, at one point we were gonna buy one, then at another point we wanted a doghouse coop, but we've made a final decision.

Our neighbor has a cute little coop and 3 hens, 2 silkies and an EE, and she can't take care of them anymore. So she's giving us the hens, as well as the coop! We already tried, and the hens get along just fine with our girls, so we're gonna use the coop for Tweet. I'll take some pictures tomorrow.
It's just perfect. A little ramp from a... I think it's 4x4 or a 5x5 coop with nesting boxes and roosts, leading into a 3x6 run. Perfect for a few Seramas!

My broody's eggs are hatching. First chick out is a gorgeous LF partridge cochin, but she's not looking so great. She's constantly gasping for air and it looks like her mother pecked her beak. The spot where her top beak meets her nostrils is bloody and loose.

I really want this little chick to survive, so do any of you have any recommendations? I got her to take a couple sips of a Gatorade mixed with water. The fact that she's constantly gasping really worries me...

I'm starting to remember why I HATE broody hens.

I walked back down to candle her other egg and it was clear! It had been freshly laid that morning!

So I threw the hen out of the nest in search of the other chick. Finally I found it. It had fallen out (or she kicked it out) of the nest and landed 4 feet down on the ground. It was cold, limp, and had dirt caked in it's mouth.

I brought it up to the house to dispose of the body when suddenly the baby chick gasped for air! The poor baby was still alive! I don't think that either of these chicks will make it, but I will give it my best. I used a Q-tip to get the dirt out of it's mouth and than I put it into the incubator to warm up.

The other chick's beak is definitely screwed up. The spot where the top beak meets the nostrils is partially broken. She's able to move it and drink, so I'll give her a chance. She must be in a ton of pain.

Oh, Coch... Hope the babies will be okay!

I refuse to let my hens go broody. I collect the eggs every day so she has none to sit on. I had a broody RIR hen, and boy, was it tough... I let her hatch 3 babies before, and the next day, they were all dead. They were trampled by momma... >.<

So I now hatch all eggs in a 'bator. Never making the mistake of letting a hen go broody.
