2 Days and no new posts? Where are you all? I'm having a lazy day today, reading and watching the rain, well, the little bit of rain LOL It's so dry here, every drop helps. I've searched a bit for fertile duck eggs yesterday. Didn't find anything yet :/  Lots of ducks for sale and for free and some cute ducklings and ducks for eating etc. No eggs though. I'll have to find a breeder I think, make some calls. Wish me luck.

Oz, what's new by you guys? 

No new deaths after the first 5, but several sick and struggling. Think one has made it though since she was eating this morning. Its a cool rainy yucky mess out there for days and we are all getting sick of the mud 5 new hatchlings inside in the brooder - afraid for them but they were all put in the bator before all this started. So nothing to do now except be careful, hope for the best and then vaccinate for fowl pox as soon as the last one hatches. I think we got the coccidiosis (?) under control. No new bloody poops under any roosts this morning. This is I think day 4 of treating with Corid and day 3 treating with Tylan. I think I am supposed to do one more day tomorrow. Then I think I need to clean out all the coops? But that is going to be really hard/pointless in this weather.

All 6 eggs are fertile and developing.

I'm so sorry that you're having to go through this.

I'm very thankful that I haven't had to deal with any disease in the 6 years that I've owned chickens.

It doesn't rain, it pours. In more than one way for you, it seems.

X2 that. I've had big problems with predators, but thankfully never disease. Touching wood my luck in that department will continue.

I have been busy between my getting the flock out of here thread and texting with Bernie and Analou

Lots has happened.

My quail were wiped out by quail disease. I lost 112 quail. I did not have bacitracin there nor did I recognize it in time.

The rest of the poultry just got treated for lice. 227 birds.

I bought a new water buffalo



Motza is a 14 month old Caribau water buffalo. Once she is old enough to calf, she will give wonderful milk and I will make cheeses.

I also bough a new goat



Feta is a native goat from the Philippines. She will be bred with a dairy goat and her offspring will be ideal for milking as well.

Mrs Oz arrived last night on a 7 day sojourn from the Philippines. She will be here in SoCal for a week. We will be seeing a Cirque de Soleil performance as well as a Musical call Sunshine Boys starring Danny DeVito and Judd Hirsch. There are a couple of other plays as well. Mrs Oz needs a good dose of the arts.

oz- i have never heard of quail disease. what are the symptoms? im assuming its bacterial, but would like any info you can share!

Introduction

Ulcerative Enteritis is an acute, highly contagious disease of chickens and quail caused by the bacterium Clostridium colinum and characterised by ulcers of the intestines and caecae. It can start suddenly and cause high mortality: 100% in quail and 10% in chickens. Turkeys, game birds and pigeons may also be affected. The condition occurs worldwide. The route of infection is oral and transmission is from faeces of sick or carrier birds or via flies. The bacterium resists boiling for 3 minutes. Predisposing factors include Coccidiosis (especially E. necatrix, E. tenella, and E. brunetti), IBDV and overcrowding.
Signs

• Listlessness.
• Retracted neck.
• Drooping wings.
• Partially closed eyes.
• Ruffled feathers.
• Diarrhoea.
• Anaemia.
• Watery white faeces (quail).

Post-mortem lesions

• Deep ulcers throughout intestine, but mainly ileum and caecae, which may coalesce and may be round or lenticular.
• Pale yellow membranes,.
• Peritonitis (if ulcers penetrate).
• Blood in intestine.
• Necrotic foci in liver.

Diagnosis

A presumptive diagnosis may be made on history and lesions. Confirmation is on absence of other diseases and isolation of Cl. colinum in anaerobic conditions (the agent is often present in pure culture in liver). Differentiate from histomonosis ('Blackhead'), necrotic enteritis, coccidiosis, salmonellosis, trichomoniasis.
Treatment

Streptomycin (44 gm/100 litres water), Bacitracin, Tetracyclines, penicillin (50-100 ppm in feed), amoxycillin, multivitamins. Response to treatment should occur in 48 to 96 hours. Treat for coccidiosis if this is a factor.
Prevention

Infection-free birds, all-in/all-out production, low level antibiotics as per treatment, possibly probiotics.

We hatched 112 quail from three different suppliers. All Coturnix and basically equal numbers of Texas A&M, jumbo and Pharaoh.

At day 5 they started dying. 5-15 a day. I thought they were drowning at first. That cost me a couple of day and about 30 chicks. By the time we got the medications right we were down to 25. After 5 days of antibiotics we stopped treatment but the problem came back.

Tragic but lessons learned. The best treatment is bacitracin. I will medicate their feed with the next hatch.
