I really find it ridiculous that they are expecting this of a backyard flock owner. These are rules that apply to large, commercial flocks not small, private flocks, it just doesn't make sense.

it is basically an attempt to log illness. if you are shipping hatching eggs/ chicks, you should be tested and monitored. to someone like me, it shows that you care enough to have your flock tested for some forms of contagous illness.

ok let me explain this another way. Sally's brahmas are pretty rare, her white faced spanish are as good as i have ever seen - although i havent seen many; and the frizzles are beautiful. i would love to buy chicks or eggs from Sally. im not truly commercial, but i do breed and sell chickens, and have several thousand dollars in my flock. before i can buy eggs/chicks/chickens from anyone, i have to weigh in the factors of importing illness to my other chickens. with her having a NPIP membership, i know what she has tested clean for. that is a big relief and usually a determining factor on me buying from anyone. she can also ship legally, no worries of confiscated eggs; and a larger buyer market.

i myself am a member in Ohio. since i have become a member, i have not been able to make enough eggs/chicks for my market.

sally this is just advice, maybe good maybe bad.

there are about as many strains of AI as there are human flu. there was an outbreak of a serious strain in PA around 1997 that i was just reading about. since then there have been very few that tested positive for it. the people who have had a serious strain in their flocks will know it because of the mortality rate.

the other strains pretty much exist everywhere, transmitted by wild birds who come in contact with free ranging flocks. there might be some cold like symptoms, they get over it and they become immune. it is passed through the egg, a serious strain may stop hatching; a mild strain will infect chicks, building immunity right off.

i dont know what strains they look for. but if covering your runs is for the AI part of your NPIP, i wouldn't worry about it so much. just drop the AI, it will save you money all the way around. several hatcheries dont test for it.
I hear you, we discussed that as well, I will go back and look at all us states requirements and see how many I cant sell to without AI. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_he.../downloads/state_importation_requirements.pdf

DH and I are scheduled for our CPTcourse Dec 4th. so funds as far as drawls isnt a biggy for us. I drew with Chad monday, with two of us we should be able to whip through the labs every quarter.

Brian, read that pdf, My eyesite is so terrible! those little numbers are a wreck from the Federal site pdf! Think they coulda scanned them in better my word! I think it says West VA utah have an number 8 needing AI testing to send into state? Harmony is trying to read them as well, lol

you know what? I think West VA is the ONLY state that requires AI testing on that pdf

Wing can you read that enough to tell the 6 from an 8? and I am reading it correctly? Heck someone from WVA can drive here if they want something!

So Brian if I am getting this correct, AI clean requires a closed flock and PT doesnt?

i see arizona too. i am not sure how PA's restrictions are, but i dont remember ever hearing my pens had to be covered.

i lost the post, someone else asked about what wire is small enough to keep hawks out. i havent hand any trouble out of 2x4. its small enough to keep my bantams in - most of the hawks around here are slightly bigger than my bantams.

Time for some cute stuff (7/8 hatched):

White broody got up and is trying to steal chicks, so it looks like I'll have to put her eggs in the incubator with the malpositioned air cell one.
