Greetings from a new chicken parent of 6!

Welcome!

I think what surprised me most is how affectionate they can be, and how each one has a definite personality. I've had chickens who sit on me, sit next to me, avoid me, groom me, greet me. . . They're amazing, and I'm perpetually in awe.
All of what you said is so very true! 😊

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

The thing that surprised me was how cheap they are to feed. A 50# bag of Kalmbach's Flock Maker is around $23. We'll go through that in about a week or two here, but that's because we have a ton of fuzzy butts running around.

We're glad you're here!

Welcome! We're happy you're here ◡̈

I was really surprised at how beneficial chicken keeping is for my mental health. I have a free range flock and I love watching them roam and laze around in the garden.
This is so true for so many!

Yesterday, an acquaintance of mine on FB posted a very long and sad post about her depression worsening. She had sold her small flock because her husband told her he thought they were adding to her stress. She didn't realize they were actually therapeutic to her until they were gone. I offered to have her come here and get a couple of silkies. She'll probably do that.
