Thanks Sally. I feel awful. I should have known he was too young to be out in those temperatures.
awwwww I would cull it, but thats your call. you are probably one of the best people to care for a chick though, I am sure you know more on what to do with her than ISally, I have to admit that I skipped over a couple few posts, but I saw your post about the food grade H2O2 and dont do it, its one of those crazy fads like people drinking their own urine for supposed positive health effects. Ask your doctor first.
Anyone have any suggestions for an exposed loop of intestine in a mushy chick? or should I just cull? I feel like I should cull, it was a wet chick and I helped it out anyway and it didn't absorb all of its intestines, looks like a big hernia, but I can't push it back in, I should cull shouldn't I? Darnit its the first lavender ameraucana I've gotten from my own birds. Why is it always the chicks you REALLY want to survive that end up going down the drain? I need a good thermometer, I think my thermometer is having mental problems, I haven't had a good hatch since the last one broke and I got this piece of c***.
YAY!!!! you are getting a ton of my eggs to be sent out Mon JAN 6th so you better LEAVE A CRAPLOAD of room Mr USA Marine FARMER! Dont get nuts throwing stuff in there right now! WAIT FOR ME!

im finding several complaints of problems in dogs and cats, but it all appears to be an older version with a different active ingredient. i havent gotten to do alot of research yet, but it is considered a remotely safe poison, class 5 on the MSDS. the manufacturer does recommend that if you use it often; or handle animals that have had it used on them often, to wear impervious gloves.
im 99% sure that it goes through the blood stream too, and should have around a 45 day egg withdraw rate (45 days is my opinion, i am not an expert and will not take "blame" for following this advice). i cant really say if it is more dangerous or safer than ivomec.
the older versions were toxic to birds, not sure about this new chemical. occasionally a company will change the name of a chemical to avoid the stop of production orders, this doesnt seem to be the case now.
from their MSDS:
"The active ingredient Fipronil, is a phenylpyrazole that disrupts normal nerve
function by blocking GABA-gated chloride channels. The action is selectively toxic to
insects. Methoprene is of low toxicity with an NOEL rat is 250 mg/kg/day. "
ok, im hoping someone else can help with this part: i feel like blocking certain chloride channels may affect embryo development, and fertility overall - but i admit it is over my head.
PETA hates it, and appears to refuse to endorse it. they will typically only endorse something that is geared to killing one parasite. my belief is kill all the parasites with as few doses of a low level poison as needed. it just seems like adding the time of using different poisons to cure different problems will be hard on the animal. not to mention a (in the long run) more prolonged exposure to poisons - because you shouldnt use more than one poison at a time.
it is slightly acidic, and may effect feathers/skin on the chicken. it is also possible (but unlikely) for nervous issues to develop in cats and dogs - so im assuming that holds true for chickens.
ill let you know as i learn more.
