Its not for everyone dolfi, but if you keep incubating sooner or later you will have to cull a chick due to genetics defects or illness. Oz and RB just like to noodle each other at any chance....
ok so the chemical equation was a bit much... sorry - lol

the killing of chicks - to be blunt - because they are terminally ill is not only humane - its mandatory

in my opinion - if you cant cull you should not hatch. waiting 6 hrs for the brave member of the house to come home is just plain unfair

pruning shears with a papertowel to hide it from you is easiest in the long run. i do it over the toilet and flush

CO2 poisoning is more prolonged but painless - unless the animal is suffering in pain originally. a ziploc bag with a container of baking soda and vinegar

some people will put the chick in a ziploc and put it in the freezer to die - they should join the bird

trust me dolfi it is not fun no matter who does it, but when it needs done it needs done as oz said.

Some simply dont have it in them, for those I suggest his other option, and to make it go smoother have a game plan BEFORE you run into an issue if you cant do it quickly with snipping. I can easily see how it can "go through" some people and give the shivers, and thats ok, just so you have a backup that works for you and in the chicks best interest....

methinks cochin does the other method, coch? suggestions so everyone is prepared in the event?

I've never had to cull a fluffy chick before, however, I have had to cull 2 straight from the shell. As unpleasant as it was, I used you method. If I were to cull an older chick, I'd probably use the CO2 method.

I have a soft spot for the 'special' ones. I tend to go above and beyond to save them.

I'm still a bit unsure of what to do with the snowy call drake. He may need to be culled, but he's such a sweet duck.

Quote: I know, and I am not sure I know what I would do in that situation.... Chad lost his, I dont know the entire story, but suffering issue comes in effect at some point. In nature something would have eaten him way before now. I cannot see how one can go without feet, esp a duckie.... I can tell you this, that duck (sorry to all my other friends, love ya BUT) that duck is in the best hands he can be right now, what have you found upon researching?

We must have posted at the same time!!  I missed this!!!  how CUTE!

I am definitely in love with samaras

I know I have to get prepared. My friend had to cull a baby chick that was born with it's intestine out.
I know it was the right thing to do, yet I could not see him do it.

Hey Sally, I like your hatching 101 page- but on your lockdown pic I would like to see the egg have a bit more shrink down than your egg- it may have been day 18 for that egg but I would have not have been comfortable about putting it in lock down.
