Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

So my 4th hatch of shipped eggs completed yesterday! 6 welsummers and 2 americauna chicks! They had some really bad air cells. Both americauna chicks had to be assisted. They pipped and started zipping and than just stopped. The dark americauna chick had trouble with flipping over and not being able to get back up for the first day. He's doing great now.
I also had to assist one of the welsummers and his "umbilical cord" bled, so I managed to get it to clot using flour. Once it dried and scabbed over, I flushed it with a sterile saline syringe and put some bacitracin ointment on the site. I cleaned out my incubator and am planning to leave him in there until his belly is healed so the other chicks don't peck on him and cause infection. How long until I know he it out of the woods for ending up with an infected abdomen? He is eating and drinking, but seems to sleep a lot. Below is pictures of my new chicks!

If his umbilical is dried and he is moving around fine I would put him in with the others. They do better with the other chicks.

In humans, the male determines the sex of the baby between two people. Maybe it's that way in chickens and animals also? It's possible.

We tried putting him with the others this am, and the other chicks kept pecking at the scabbed area. It is dried out, even has a tiny piece of egg shell stuck to it that I couldn't get off. You don't think the other chicks will injure him? Right now he's in the incubator with food, water and one of my daughter's stuffed toys to snuggle with.

We tried putting him with the others this am, and the other chicks kept pecking at the scabbed area. It is dried out, even has a tiny piece of egg shell stuck to it that I couldn't get off. You don't think the other chicks will injure him? Right now he's in the incubator with food, water and one of my daughter's stuffed toys to snuggle with.

Most likely they were just checking the newbie out. They use their beaks to explore like little kids use hands to touch everything. Just check on it after a while and make sure they are not drawing blood. It will do better with its hatch buddies. Usually within a day I can never tell who was who.

Believe it or not... I'm not set yet to incubate this year. Life is moving so fast. I won't hatch as many as I did last year. I'm trying to keep things in balance. We got a family milk cow this year and I am really juggling all the critters plus get my garden planted.

I am anxious to get started though and have my breeders all picked out. Sure do miss you guys!

Maybe try putting a chick or two in with the little one so it will have buddies. You'd be surprised how quickly a pecking order is established. If he is reintroduced with other chicks when ready, he stands a better chance of not being picked on.

I'd suggest a little brown sugar in his water so he keeps his electrolytes balanced and strength up. You will know if his abdomen gets infected. Look for discoloration under the skin and swelling after a week or so. Sometimes they present with a lopsided abdomen as well.

He has pooped a couple of times already. Only thing that concerns me now, is he is sleeping standing up with his head hanging down. The other chicks seem to sleep laying down with their head stretched out. Maybe it's because he is in the incubator without all the nice fluffy bedding?
