They're hatching!!! Their air cells must have been ok in the end. 14 have hatched, 6 more pipped that I can see. The chicks are bowling, so some of the eggs are turned.

So -hypothetically - what would happen if you turned the eggs only 1 time a day? I'm trying to figure out what is causing my hatches to have so many mal-positioned chicks. I turn 3 times a day, but maybe I haven't been turning them far enough? I tend to do really well up until hatch time. Most are fully developed, but are mal-positioned and don't pip.

Some say 5 or more turns..... always an odd number for the "overnight" no turn period, unless you set your alarm to turn them.....

As far as what angle to turn them.... below is a close proximity to 45 degrees from vertical.... each direction.... and the movement should be gentle.....

I found that my most malpositioned chicks occured when I left them in the turner to hatch.

The last hatch that I had was the best yet. I had them pip and then hatch within 24 hours of pipping. They didn't hatch all at the same time, but I had the greatest percentage of healthy chicks yet.

It was a completely dry incubation and hatch. I have a very good thermometer/hygrometer from incubator warehouse and my dry incubation humidity was reading (keep in mind that I live at sea level, I actually live near a town named "Sea Level") between 20 and 24% and I found that increasing my incubation temp to 101.5 seemed to bring them home without drama.

I tried dry incubation last time but increased the humidity to 45% for hatching and nearly all of them drowned or were malpositioned or had serious orthopedic issues.

On the subject of my mareks vaccine experiment, I have found that I can vaccinate them at any age and the vaccine works. I keep them separated until a week after I vaccinate them and this seems to be successful. The birds that I have vaccinated have been growing faster and healthier than the unvaccinated birds. I have had fewer losses due to coccidiosis or URI's and the vaccinated birds are a ful 1/3 bigger than the unvaccinated birds, this includes my silkies, ameraucanas and meat birds.

I have been reading studies that have suggested that vaccinating birds at any age can be effacacious, though this is off-label. I would like to organize a mareks vaccine clinic (ala rabies clinics) for my county, but I'm not sure if this would even be legal.

Are you going to vaccinate all of your adult birds as well? If we vaccinate all of our birds at once, there is no need to segregate, correct? I am leaning towards vaccinating since I would rather have the extra protection! Also, Sally, how much ventilation do you have for your hatcher? I can't decide if I need to add some more holes in mine...

So I laid most of them down. Only the 3 or 4 with the worse air cells are now laying down. I've been working carefully to raise and now stabilize the temps. But I issue now is the ones in lockdown haven't been turned for days except the daily candling when I look from all angles. Should I be worried about that? Also what should my temps in my hatcher be? It's still air.

Anyone?
