UPDATE on little booger duck

he is moving around in the bator somehow lol
I look in he is at one spot and then I watch him and he doesnt move and then I get tired of standing and when I go check he is elsewhere!

So IDK

but look at the am pic and the just now pics
WED MORNING

WED NIGHT
Little booger was peeping this morning! and my alarm didnt go up to feed him all night! here it set to Saturday only! ughhhh

here he was at 530 am this morn and for some reason the image makes it look bigger than it is. but its really going down it doesnt stink or anything.
he is still sorta round and cant walk yet, just rolls. anyone have duck orthopedic links? I have chicken but not sure if I will have to do anything with his feet, they are closed somewhat yet. They may open when he starts walking idk. if he starts walking

Monday early morning I investigated all unhatched eggs, found this guy still alive but no beak visible under membrane.

Took my best guess at his position, and his neck was along the low side of the dip of air cell, so I slipped his head out, which had been pointing straight down into the middle of the egg. he gasp for air, and I quickly cleared nares and even inside his mouth.

Wed is when I think I got him out of the shell, and I started with a few beads of grow gel and provit water to wash it down. Wed started doing the antibiotics

Most absorption has started Wed eve into this morning. big difference.

My worries on what to do now....
I still have to physically open his beak and put grow gel in it and dip his beak into water to get him to wash it down. How long can he live without food, he is eating very very little. Since his yolk sack has only started to recede I will assume he is using it for energy now and will start eating and drinking soon. He is in a cup so that he can keep his legs forced under him. Soon he SHOULD be able to keep them under himself but he still has a bulge that rolls him.
his legs are weak, but I have noticed that he fights me now when I try to open his mouth to add grow gel, strong neck almost need three hands to feed him.

Today is thursday morning, its been 3 days now. Which would still be in the time frame for a duckling to internally pip, pip rest and hatch. HOWEVER, Is there anything else I could possibly do? I will take any suggestions I can! and how often do I feed grow gel and can he sustain on grow gel? should I be adding a little wetted crumble in his mouth, or making a milk egg yolk wet mix or would raw yolk hurt him, I would think not? I think its too soon for anything but light mush as I have to force him to drink yet. I should weigh him, but I dont see the point other than to add more worry to myself. Sounds dumb right?

I have gone this far, as long as I see improvement I will keep trying, but if I see him suffering he is going to be culled.

hmm. we've never hatched ducks. (yet) but one of my chicks had something similar last hatch and once it was all absorbed, the swelling went down and she did start walking...

and ditto on the "you are the one we come to!" I have faith that this guy is in great hands!!

Aw Sally. You have been doctoring birds too. I think you are doing all you can for the little quacker. Hope he pulls thru for you.

Thanks everyone, I wish I had more confidence, I am no nurse by any means and nor do I do this "stuff" anymore, well I thought I didnt!

For force feeding you might want to get some baby bird food, that you could mix with pedialyte or water and place on his tongue one drop at a time *or* you could try to tube feed him, but if you haven't tube before, probably not an ideal one to learn with.Doable, just not an ideal way to learn. Sounds like you have the manual dexterity and you definitely know your birds, so I'm sure you could do it. If needed I am available by phone to help.

If you decide to tube you would need a size 8 or 10 french catheter tube that you would and you could start by giving .1 to .25ml every 30 minutes and increase to .25 to .5ml once you got the hang of it.

If you decide to try this you would need to modify the tube by cutting the end off and smoothing the sharp end with a file or by melting it a little with a match. I'll take some pictures of an unmodified one and try to explain why you need to do this.

Here are some pictures that might help you.

How To Crop Feed Your Bird Diagram

Here are some videos

These are using a crop needle, not a plastic tube.

This one uses a tube like I use

These are posts on how to tube a larger bird, but you might find some useful info them:

I wish I could upload to youtube and keep the quality of the film, you cant even see the great veining in it after upload!
Does anyone have another site I can use to get better uploads of videos?
these are all over the place! ughhhh I have about until day 18-19 to get them to 14-17% (that's 4-5 days)

#5 & #13 lost 15.16% & 16.84%
ep.gif
(I will have to move them to hatcher and up humidity for them earlier (they are now on WATCH)
#2, 6 7 8 11 & 18 are only in the 10% range so these guys I will dip more often each day in hopes to keep going. 6 & 7 being the ones at lowest lost point. (I may sand these a tad again)
