note the embryo toxicity occurred in rodents when given at high doses for many days
REPEAT DOSE TOXICITY DATA
SUBCHRONIC / CHRONIC TOXICITY:
Albendazole was given to beagle dogs (6 male and 6 female) at dosage levels of 0, 5, 30, and 60 mg/kg bw/day for six months. A decrease in food
intake was observed in the 30 and 60 mg/kg dosed females, and weight gain was decreased in the 60 mg/kg dosed males and females. Decreased
absolute and relative testes and uterine weights and slight increases in relative liver and kidney weights were observed in the 60 mg/kg dose group. An
incidence of small nodules in the stomach were increased in all treated groups, but they were shown to be normal submucosal lymphoid follicles
microscopically. Hypocellularity was observed in the sternal bone marrow in the 60 mg/kg dosed group. The No Observed Effect Level (NOEL) was 5
mg/kg bw/day.
REPRODUCTIVE / DEVELOPMENTAL TOXICITY:
Albendazole has caused embryotoxicity and skeletal malformations in pregnant rats and rabbits. Fetal effects observed in rats occurred at 10 to 30
mg/kg/day administered during gestation days 6 to 15. Rabbit teratogenicity and maternal toxicity was observed at 30 mg/kg/day administered during
days 7 to 19. No teratogenic effects were observed in mice given oral dosages up to 30 mg/kg/day administered during gestation days 6-15. No effects
on male or female fertility were observed in rats given oral dosages of 30 mg/kg/day. Albendazole has been shown to be excreted in animal milk. Its
presence in human milk has not been determined.
Reproductive effects of albendazole were investigated in multigeneration oral-dosing studies in rats. Albendazole caused reduced survival and growth
rate during the post-natal lactation period. The NOEL was 5.8 mg/kg bw/day.
MUTAGENICITY / GENOTOXICITY:
Albendazole was negative in an Ames study, a chromosomal aberration test, metaphase analysis assay in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, and in a
mouse micronucleus test. Albendazole induced weak activity in an in-vitro BALB/3T3 cells transformation assay in the presence of metabolic activation
only. Albendazole isolated from a formulated product gave a positive result in an in vivo mouse bone marrow micronucleus test. Future Phrase
CARCINOGENICITY:
Albendazole was not carcinogenic in rats or mice administered 20 mg/kg/day for 117 weeks or 400 mg/kg/day for 108 weeks, respectively.
In the Philippines, Valbazen is cheap ($20/Liter) versus $75 in USA. I use it twice a year as I routinely dose all my animals at once 4x per year for paracites, alternating with Ivermectin.
Anecdotally, in doses of 10mg/kg I have had no issues with egg production or their hatchability. I have not performed randomized trials against a control
