yay! great work!!!
I am thinking about slapping together another pallet coop and this time shoving straw all in the walls for insulation so I can keep youngins in, un beknownst to hubby!! Its the roofing that gets me everytime!! that stuff costs a fortune : ( I wish I could find some wire spools or even an old big satelite dish to make into a roof!! I keep lookin on CL but notta!
pics pics!!!
I never thought about insulating the pallets like that, great idea.I'm a picker/scraper from way back.Since we do constuction I often get to gather scraps that would either go to the landfill or be burnt.Since I LOVE trees I hate to see one sawed into lumber and then wasted so I save all I can.We have taken down old building and I save tin and such for roofing.I have the stuff saved now to build 2 more coops about 6 ft by 6 ft.Just gotta get time to build them.Enough small talk.LOL.Heres a couple pictures I made alittle while ago.I am so thrilled with this little bird.It is sooooo cute.I can hardly wait for the others to pop on out.I was so sad at first that they weren't all gonna hatch and now I'm thrilled I got one.

YAYAYAYYA!!!! come on peeps!!!

Just a plea to learn from my mistake and be extra-careful:
No incubator (yet) but my very first broody hen, so excited! She's been sitting on her own egg plus two from the egg lady down the street.
I have been frustrated by my inability to see anything when trying to candle the eggs, and have tried different lights and methods. Now the eggs are at about 12 days.
Yesterday I got a new, brighter flashlight and tried to candle one of the eggs and . . . . dropped the egg. I was standing up and impatient to see something. Well, I saw it. Poor, poor wee chick-to-be. Please be careful and sit down and take your time when candling. I feel so awful.

I did that once, too.

I've been told it's more important to keep the lock-down in force than to turn younger eggs, either automatically or manually. You don't want to mess up the hatching chicks and opening the incubator to turn the others will mess up the temp and humidity. I just bought a second bator for the lock-down eggs.

It's official: I'm now a crazy poultry lady as well as a crazy cat, horse and rabbit lady.

Sorrreeeeee - that is yucky!!! I culled 4 on day 11 and 6 yesterday (day 14). None had developed - just yellow yolk fermenting in the heat!!

I just culled an egg that had a heartbeat. I feel so awful. My only consolation is that it was significantly underdeveloped and not as far along as the others so there was probably something wroTng anyway, but that was rough
That stinks, I was worried about that too!!!

(Notes: Lockdown this morning, day 18 at 10:30 am. will candle Blue Silkie B "Halo" as well as the 8 BCMxComets, will move BCM eggs towards the hole in the front so that I MAY possibly be able to stick a straw (with a piece of rubber taped on the end) in during lockdown to give them a little turning. Will KEEP "Halo" In the egg carton, since his egg is tiny and doesnt sit straight up I will see how is air cell is formed and place like this pic below.....

I will NOT lower temp, I WILL Raise Humidity 58%~60% unless candle shows air cell too large then I will do average 65%)
