Buy the feed grade only.

I put it in a container for them to take a dust bath in, mixed with woodstove ashes when available, or sand. They love to dust bathe in it.

Don't breathe it in- wear a mask if you sift it around.

Can someone tell me what this is, when and how to use it?

It is a powdery substance that is handy to use in the coop or in livestock bedding. It knocks down insects with an exoskeleton and I mainly use it to dust on poop boards to keep them dry. Also great to dust and mix in your floor bedding. As mentioned, buy only the food grade variety. I buy mine at Tractor Supply (25 lb. bad around 9 dollars). Love DE and used it for years in the coop and goat shed!
