I have read that some tests show that DE (diatomaceous earth) "can be Carcinogenic to humans". Wouldn't that mean it would be equally dangerous to chickens who have sensitive respiratory stems?

I would guess so...I feel good when i drink it, and mix it with their feed to worm them, but i would be wary of dusting their coop with it to kill bugs. I have struggled with asthma since i was like 4 and stopped having to take meds for like 5 years, but when my aunt dusted all the couches, i began having problems again, so no, i wouldn't dust the coop with it, but i do feed it to them and have never had any worm problems :) Hope this helps.

Give it time, your chickens will eventually have worm problems.

It can help to kill bugs in very specific situations, most claims are anecdotal, exaggerated and/or downright false....
.......but it is definitely a serious respiratory irritant to anything that has lungs.
