What can this control in Chickens..How do you apply etc.

DE is best used either in the food or in the bedding. It's great to put in nests as it kills parasites which annoy hens. If you feed it to them, it worms them.

DE is ineffective as a wormer. It is ineffective when it's wet...just like inside the chickens innards.

Sorry peeps, but many well meaning flock keepers are passing along lots of information that has been passed on to them that was once believed to be true but has since been shown not to be. Unfortunately, this refers to much of what's been passed along about DE. One well known blogger, the Chicken Chick, used to be a huge supporter of DE but has since revised her opinion. Go to her page and check out what she has to say.

I guess what I've learned is it really is important to do your own research and seek out the experts and not accept just one blogger's word as gospel, no matter how sincere.

There will also be those who will stubbornly swear something works, no matter what the solid evidence to the contrary.

This site has many, many threads that are cries for help from members because their chickens are losing weight, have pale combs, quit laying eggs months ago, or are covered with lice and mites.

When the old timers ask them if the chicken has been wormed, many times the first response is.......my chickens can't have worms/lice/mites because we use DE all of the time!

When dawg says DE is ineffective in most applications, what he is politely saying is -- a lot of money is wasted on DE because it is not the wonderful cure all for parasites that a lot of people claim!

I have learned a LOT from this thread. And I have said some things that got corrected, and learned from it. I also do a LOT of reading........

I have never used DE myself, and if I ever do it would probably be in nests, since they stay dry. But, as I said, I have seen enough enough evidence of DE not working to believe dawg!
