Did anyone catch Salmonella from their backyard flocks? Share your experience

I did get it in highschool many years ago from milk that was store bought. I lived on a farm growing up. Never did I get sick from anything on the farm. With that said I had friends who did. But their farms where nasty and animals were not taken care of properly.

As for a percentage it is really hard to say. Backyard flocks have become "cool" recently. So it's honestly hard to come up with a number. I have probably delt with 1500 cases of this, not a single case I have ever worked came from a backyard flocks. Mainly store bought chicken that was not handled properly. With the CDC and news. You never get the whole story.

The people on here can help you order from an online source. I got my Ducks and Turkeys from the local feed store. I wanted to see and touch before buying. I didn't want to get them delivered. But I am just personally like that. I also ended up rescuing a bunch as well. Read reviews, look up Better Business complaints. Do research do you want them as pets, for meat or eggs. Ask people in your area where they get theirs. I did almost a year of research before I bought them.

Again the joy and everything else that comes with raising your own animals either as pets or food far out weighs any risk. Use common sense wash your hands, use hand sanitizer keep your animals clean.

I will tell you that the hep C outbreak in California right now is 100% a hygiene outbreak. Our first step in any outbreak is education on hand washing. You would be amazed at how much can be controlled by a simple thing like washing your hands. I wish you all the best.

Absolutely. People who aren't fastidious after using the toilet will have e. coli on their hands and yet everybody goes around shaking hands. You wouldn't want to see a culture of the bugs swabbed off a mobile phone.... or all sorts of "everyday" things.
There are bugs everywhere. What you need to concern youself with is not letting them increase in numbers (food handling/storage), and not letting them into your body by washing your hands and keeping your hands off your face, not eating anything which is undercooked etc.
The existence of bugs doesn't mean that you'll ever get sick from them. There are tetanus bugs in the dirt. Do I worry about getting tetanus? No. I don't worry about getting sick from any of my chook bugs either. Chances are low.

I vaccinate my flock against salmonella, I'm not taking chances with my family or flock!

Hi Mrs Light Sussex:

Can you please enlighten me on Vaccination of your flock against salmonella? How much does it cost? How often do you need to do it?

Thank you to all of you who responded, What a friendly and knowledgeable crowd!

Nope never,my dad drinks 3 raw eggs (shutter)
Ever morning for breakfast.

I don't wash my hands every time I held the chickens (that would sum up to around 5,000 times a day!!!)
I have never had it.

In my opinion since more and more people are getting backyard flocks or wanting organic non tortured eggs the egg selling business in stores are slowing but ever so steadily going down. So they make an excuse of backyard flocks giving salmonella and people believe it.
on my experience though birds don't give it yes its all around but you don't have to be so careful that you make sure and wash your hands every 2 second because you held a chicken.
(And yes I said nontortured eggs)

I wash my hand frequently, but I'm also a chicken kisser. Yep -- I do that. I wash after using the restroom, before handling food etc. And when I've got any kind of meat: beef, chicken, pork or fish on the counter/sink I always wash it down with diluted bleach.

I've had food poisoning twice. Once was many years ago I put a 1/2 can of clam chowder in the refrigerator and ate it the following day. I got terribly sick. I also got intensely sick following lunch at a restaurant some years back.

Oh my! I give my Ducks kisses all the time!!!!! And they come and get kisses from me. It really helps build up you immunity to things. They are just such a blessing and joy. I wish I had started years ago.

Haha -- I'm glad I'm not the only one. Well, I know I'm not, but not that many will admit it. When I was little, my parents always told me not to kiss my pets on the mouth. I did anyway. I've always kissed my pets no matter if it was a dog, cat, rabbit, hamster, lizard, horse, snake, turkey or chicken. It does help you build immunity I believe. Of course, there is always a risk associated with it and I'm willing to accept that for all of the joy it brings me in return. I think if your environment is too sterile you are more likely to be overcome with the germs you do come in contact with.
