Thank you for your reply! Its definitely his foot, remember how his toes are facing the wrong way? Maybe it's my imagination but I swear it looks worse. And I know for a fact HE is worse. He limps on that foot a lot and trying not to put pressure on it. He lifts it up to his chest and holds it there..like it's just THAT painful to stand. He was a complete zombie out in the coop...I brought him inside the house and put him in my bath tub so I can observe him better. He was struggling with pain it was obvious, so I got a bath towel and laid it in the tub so it would be easier to walk and more comfortable. He walked a lot better for a minute- but I think it was just excitement or burst of energy because it didn't take long for him to start acting pained again. And he is FILTHY compared to his hatch mates!! His tail feathers are brown and wet and his belly feathers brown and wet- I'm guessing from just laying there all day but idk where the wetness came from unless he fell in the drinker or something. I've been mentally preparing myself all day to euthanize. My husband forbids it! He says he was in there playing with him and he's fine. That doesn't sound like a foot-related problem--if it is, it's one I never heard of.
There are a lot of things that can cause sickness in chickens: disease, about which you often can do very little; worms or parasites, which can have very unexpected affects; vitamin deficiencies, which cause a variety of symptoms; blockages, which often show in the crop; and poisoning.
First, I would get your bird on some poultry vitamins, or a low-iron all-purpose supplement for babies. Secondly, it does sound as though he's in pain. I would give him half of a baby aspirin or a fifth of an adult normal 325 mg aspirin: do not use any other pain killer. Most are poisonous. Administer it ground up in water--if he won't drink it, don't make him.
Now inspect your chicken. Document any symptoms. Any hardness or stiffness in his crop or joints, any oddities in poop, any paleness of the comb, whether he's eating or not. how his stance looks. Check for parasites. such as lice near his bum. Take a picture.
Start a new thread with the picture and symptoms. Tag eggcessive, casportpony, wyorp rock, and anyone else you think may be able to help. I am not a disease expert, and these people have far more experience than I do.
Good luck.
