Did I do the right thing?

Yeah. I can't right now, since I'm not sure which of the barred rocks it is when he's not being obnoxious, but the next time he acts up, that's a good idea.

cover the fence and regardless to how old any pullet is, roos are roos. At hatching time some roos will pull out the pullets and work them, so when it comes being a teenager, they know just how to spar and take on the other roos

Are you serious?!?

Stay out of his way, or use a piece of cardboard/ light weight wood between him and your legs, if he can't see them he might not charge. I Know this is going to be hard to do, as you feed and want to be with your babies but it is only for a few days. Also you don't want to bruise the meat before it's in the pot. You could let hubby feed till he is gone.

My wyandott roo sold cuz he wouldn't leave my grandkids alone. One grandson (11yrs) said -I'm gone chop his head/ in the pot with him- What's funny is he won't even eat chicken with bones, only nuggets or strips-"I didn't raise him".

Hope this helps. He won't give up, it's just his nature.

My worry is there was no quarantine and there is a possibility that your babies could get sick

I would be putting that roo in a cage of some sort to be sure that he doesn't jump up and maybe get your baby next time. If you don't have a cage I would get a large box from the store. Put some pine shavings in there for him and some food and water. You can get LARGE sturdy watermelon boxes from walmart...that what I use for my booders. That would fit 4 roos easy.

There was no option. We had no way to safely quarantine them that night and by now, there's no point. If they were gonna get something, that would have happened already.

Baby's not going in the pen until they're in the freezer. And all it takes is a dirty look from him and he's in the crate.

How do you keep them from flying out?

Bird netting with a stick across the top of the box to help stabilize the netting. You can use an old sheet, but not sure if it would be enough lite for him, or put a bulb in there for day time and feeding.

As for quarantine, often you don't have that choice. They started out right, but these roos also belonged to a friend, I tend to trust my friends that are in local.

Also, I have made an A frame type run, use posts, pound them into the ground, really sturdy then lace the posts together at the top. Duct tape is great for this. Place posts for only as long as you have wire- because your going to put wire and tie it to the posts, also the A top, just use wire or string to "lace" the top so no escapes. I used wire up one side, across the end (wire bends) down to the opening where you throw roo in...lol. I used a large piece of wire secured with a couple sticks to keep birds in.
Here is a view of my masterpiece! lol, pretty sloppy but it worked and I could recycle it for another use.

You will see that I placed plastic over some of the wire so if it rained, they could go out and it was always dry grass there.

Good luck to you

No, she got these off of craigslist, they were freebies.

As for the rest, this time, there was no time. Good ideas for the future, though. Thanks!

I always carried a hockey stick when I had my roos. And... I always tried to be aggressive first with my roo. Come out chasing him...great exercise!!

Tried to make him scared of me first. Sometimes I forgot and he always got me.

Some roos never give up.

we used one by two's and stappled hardware cloth inbetween them and than screwed the two together to make it nice and sturdy. My son could stand on it. I do have a picture of it here in my journal but it's at the beginning of the journal so you will have to go to archives and click on the first month of my journal to see it.

It worked wonderfully and we use that box over and over! We just set the light right on top of the metal screen for heat.
