My Silkie, Popcorn, has been sitting on some eggs. She was in one of the top nesting boxes. This evening when I went to check on her one of the eggs had pipped. After it got dark I moved her and all 4 eggs to a brooder. I was worried about hte chicks and the height and the other chickens. They pick on Popcorn already. I don t know if it s cause of her hair or her size but they do pick on her.

I am about to go check on her and make sure she is still on her eggs. I am worried I should of just waited til morning to move her.
Do you think she ll stay on the eggs?

Also how long does it take a chick to hatch after the pip?

as far as whether she will stay on the eggs, I have no personal experience but have read many threads of others who's hen would not. I guess it really depends on the mom.

We have had a baby that pipped and was fully hatched in 2 hours flat and another that took 22.5 hours before it decided to come out. most people that I have seen on this sight say that they give there baby's 24 hours after ther pip before they get concerned or interviene. with a broody hen you really can't moniter the babies that closely so I would trust her instincts to care for them.
Good Luck

Popcorn is doing great\\!! She stayed onthe nest and today we had a fully hatched chick. the others still aren t pipped. I guess I will give them another day and see what will happen.

Grats on the baby, hope Popcorn sticks it out. The Silkie moms usually go the distance and then some. Is she sitting on Silkie eggs? Update..... with pics

Still can't get over the "Toadsuck Ar" thing here, I may have to move there.
