Did I get ripped off??

I bought two chicks at my local food store the other day. and I think they aren't pure bred. This one is some sort of a silkie because he has black skin and five toes\\

but look, he has no feathers n his feet

and this one is some sort f plish because he has the bump on his head

but i've never seen a polish with this feather pattern n a polish before.

You didn't get ripped off, hatchery birds almost always look like that, the first is a Buff Silkie and the other is a red Polish

Umm, no - I wouldn't show them if I were you. Hatchery birds are often crossbred anyway, so in technically you didn't get ripped off by the seller, but by the hatchery who supplied the seller.

The Silkie looking bird is just poor quality, and the polish looking bird is a cross. See how its crest is small, its lets are yellow/pink, and its coloring is chipmunk? That is all indicative of a crossbred chick.

Yes, the second one is a "Red Polish" - But red is not a recognized color, and infact an ongoing "project" created by Ideal Hatchery by crossing brown leghorns and Polish.

ah well... even if they aren't the best quality chicks, I still love them!

If you one day want to show birds, do not get hatchery ones, they are usually poor quality. Instead pick what brred you want to show and then find a personal breeder here on BYC that has show quality chicks, and buy offspring or hatching eggs from them!

yes mutts are the best! I hatched some mutt chicks too and they are awesome! o and thanks for the tip! I might find a breeder on here one day
