Alright, well.. I went to pick up 6 cochin chicks today and the lady was also selling peachicks and I wanted to look at them (since her peacocks WERE beautiful after all..).. in the end, I got suckered into buying one. I SWORE she told me she was feeding them the same thing as the chicks, but when I did some research on raising peachicks I see that they should be on a gamebird type of feed. ... I didn't end up buying any b/c I thought the chick starter would be alright. Is this peachick going to starve to death by the time I get to the store tomorrow???? Or is this feed okay for tonight?

Hmmm, im not sure. If she was feeding it this feed...then for the night it should be ok. Oh, and congrats on getting the peachick.! Im not sure on the medicated stuff. I have never raised peafowl. Did you only get one? I think like chickens, they need at least 2 to feel safe. Oh, I DO know they can fly, so you might have to have it in a covered pen. I cant waite to see pics!!

Haha thanks, I really wasn't prepared to get a peachick, but I jumped at the chance. It's a Pied Blue India. I'm not sure if I got a good deal or not, but she sold the chick to me for $22.

I don't know about medicated stuff either.. I see that ducks are not supposed to have it because they have a bigger appetite and can overdose on it.

Yes only one, she said it would be fine if raised with the chicks.. here's hoping she's right. But she did have a large farm,-- horses, ducks, pheasants, peafowl (10 that I could see)... she raises pheasants with the DEC for re-releasing into the wild. And of course the chickens.

Haha I saw them flying, she had netting over their area outside... which is probably what I'll probably do since a lot of people around here have dogs that are never on leashes. I might end up fencing in my yard too.. but thats a whole different story. lol.

Well hopefully someone else might know! I'm kinda scared of this little critter dying on me after I just spent $22 on it! x_x

NEW INFORMATION ON BROODING PEACHICKS: Peachicks need warmer brooding temperatures.
Start at about 100 deg.F and decrease by 5 deg. F each week until peachicks are fully feathered. Peachicks are VERY sensitive to drafts. Draft free brooding area is a MUST. Hand water each peachick on arrival. Add marbles/small rocks to fount tray to keep peachicks from climbing in. Our breeder starts her peachicks out on scrambled eggs/yogurt for the first few days. Also offer 28% protein starter feed, gamebird or turkey starter. Like turkey poults, peachicks are slow to start. Make sure to change the litter frequently and remove any damp spots.

EMERGENCY FEED - Finely chopped boiled eggs!

So I'm guessing the chick will probably eat it, but its not the best for it. I can do the finely chopped boiled eggs, they are 6 days old, but do you think the chicks are safe to eat that as well at this age?

Sounds like what you have for them is fine! $22 ?? What a deal!! Those can be some expencive birds! And Ohhh, so beautifull. Congrats! Oh, and the egg wont hurt the babies...but in SMALL amounts. They need the feed to grow properly. Congrats on the good buy! I wish I could get a few peafowl....but too pricey for me! Around here they sell for about $50. each!

Holy cow. That is pricey. She had some black shouldered ones, the India blues, and some white ones that were just beautiful.

Thanks for the reply, just worried b/c I haven't seen the peachick eat yet.. seems like the chicks are always eating but that one. He always acts sleepy.

If you haven't seen it eat, and it is acting sleepy....I would try the boiled egg yolk. Try to get it to eat something. It doesn't take long for them to go downhill fast. Is it drinking?
Where are you located, that you got peachicks so cheap???

I'm in Upstate NY, super upstate. I live on Lake Ontario (Mexico, NY) and the chicks were purchased in Williamstown, NY which is 35mins east of me.

Alright, I'm going to boil up an egg. I'll eat half myself and chop up the other half for the chicky. The others seem to be beating him/her up a bit as well. I probably shouldn't seperate since he/she would be all alone should I?

Good luck with your new baby! How exciting!!

If the other guys are picking on this little one, maybe you could seperate but still leave it in the same cage (does that make sense?), so everyone can still see and hear each other, but no physical contact. Or.. seperate this guy out with one other chick for company.

Wow, how exciting! Do you already have a seperate pen/run built? LOL! My hubby would kill me if I gave him that much extra work.

Yeah actually we have a cottage behind our house that the people before us used to rent out to people (since we live on the lake). We just bought this house a year ago... but had no plans to rent it out or anything, its quite big. Two rooms, has electricity run out to it-- I'm not quite sure exactly how big it is, but its big enough for a queen size bed, a couch, and some other stuff. So I'm sure the 6 chicks, and the 1 peachick will have plenty of room. We are going to fence off to the left and behind it-- leave the front door for easy access for myself (store the feed, shavings, etc in a part of the one room).

There's about 12 feet from the left side of the building to the treeline (Cedars), and about 14 feet from the back of the building to the big maple,-- so they'll have a really big area to run around in.

I think I'm going to separate them.. he is picking back at them a bit, but I'm not sure if he's actually holding his own and with him not eating so well... I guess I'd rather be safe than sorry. Haha I keep calling the chick a him.. habit I guess. Calling my baby (the one in my belly) a him and I have no idea what I'm carrying either, but last time I was right! haha.
