Did I mess up?

Husband agreed to buy a new coop so he wouldn't have to build one....went to look at this but I felt it was not worth 5000 so I have been looking around and found one on craiglist for $1 but it is huge and needs a little work, well built and heavy, picking it up over the weekend................first pic is what I said no to,,,,second pic is what I am getting..

Looks like its gonna need a bit of tlc to get it in decent shape. But I think it has potential and did you say for $1? Im a big fan of not spending lots of money. If you can fix it up and make it last a few more years I say its cute, I like the style, and good find.

Yep !!! $1..

son in law is gonna haul it on his roll back so hauling is free, but worried he will be over the legal limit ,legal is 10 feet wide, this is 10 1/2 feet wide by 10 1/2 feet by 6ft high..............what is a safe way to clean it up bleach or something else...and it really is alot more solid than the pictures show...I knew if I looked long enough I would find something without spending a fortune on a prefab that is cheaply made...

WOW! Great find! Personally, I like it much better than the first pict.
I had a similar find, and old coop from a friend (free) but nasty and in need of a lot of work. Take it slow, one project at a time, and get help as often as possible (!). You'll love the results.
It took a couple of weeks but my chicks moved in this past Sat. There is still LOTS more to do and it'll be a work in progress - probably for the rest of the summer.

I agree. It's nothing a little elbow grease and some sweat equity won't fix! Good luck and post pics when you're done!
BTW, I use Oxine to sanatize my coop.

I agree...the nest boxes are cool and def. worth the $1. As for the coop...I would prolly wipe/hose or squirt the whole thing down with some strong bleach to kill anything on it and then just to make getting it "pretty" quick...once the bleach dries I'd put up thin paneling up on the inside, cheap floor tiles on the floor, and thin plywood on the outside. The roof looks pretty good and with the new "wood cover" you'll have a nice smooth place to paint. The windows look like they just need some paint too.

All in all...if you can move it...I'd say you did great!

Rustic, I love rustic and your chickens could care less as long as they stay warm, dry and full. Great job. If you have a powerwasher a once over would do. Throw some Sevin5 around you're good to go. You won't know how water proof it is until it rains but just mend as you go along. Your chickens are lucky.

Do you know what you could do with this hen house for $5000? You definitely made a good decision. If it's lasted this long, it must be strong. I'm afraid the prefabs won't last but a few years. So, with way less money, you can fix it up to be a better end product. Besides, it you decide you did mess up, for $1, how big a deal can it be? The parts are worth more than that and you could sell them as surplus.
