I got hi-cal parakeet grit.... I see it has oyster shells in it. The thing is... every bird grit at out TWO petstores had oyster shells in it. I do have chicken grit and it looks like gravel, but the chunks seem much too big. I tried to grind some in my coffee grinder but I broke the coffee grinder.

I can return it if it's the wrong grit, I haven't opened it yet. But there weren't any other options at either pet store.

Our feed store doesn't have chick grit, just the chunky gravel grit. Am I out of luck?

How about sand for them to peck at? I think I saw somebody mention sand as an alternative?

But you should be able to send the unopened box back to the store.

I did a search before asking. In the results no one said NOT to use it, but I was still concerned about the oyster shell content because they say not to give plain oyster shells, but maybe in the grit it's ok since they aren't eating much? That's why I decided to ask here.

I would not feed it. Chicks do not need the calcium.

Get a scoop of sand from somewhere for them, coarse sand is even better and your driveway could be a source! Free is good!
