Did others think you were crazy?

When I told my wife I was getting chickens (which was shortly after I got 5 bee hives) she said I was crazy and there was no way she wanted chickens. So, I sent her on vacation to see her mom and dad and when she returned there were 20 chicks in a brooder in her dining room.

After the initial shock she warmed up to the chicks real quick.

They grow so fast that before I knew it they needed to be in their coop.... so, to get them out of the house my wife helped build the coop and run. I admit I was in a little trouble due to the amount of dust the chicks made in the dining room.

Today we have 37 chickens and two large coops. She sits outside with the chickens every evening after work and is very happy we got them.

Just get them. He will really enjoy them.

I have gotten alot of smack from coworkers and freinds of mine about the new additions to our family. I am crazy, I move out to the country and went 'hick'. I even heard how they are filthy animals but just soo cute. I am called the chicken lady now.

I have never been one to base my actions around other's opinions and I am glad I listened to myself again! I haven't had them very long but everyday they do something to make me laugh or smile. And after the last couple of years, I need all of the help I can get.

I enjoy taking care of them and knowing that one day, some day, I'll have eggs. My daughter has gotten an interest in them and my husband too! In fact, I asked my husband if he wanted to go down to Columbus to get some rescues this weekend and w/o a pause, he said Heck Yeah!

Anyway, get them, enjoy them and if you tire of them, well, at least you can look back and say you wanted it and you gave it a try...

That disease people talk about, it's called 'CHICKENITIS', and you don't have to be around chickens to get it. It starts with a symptom called CURIOSITY, usually you start by getting a few chickens, but, after that, you can NEVER BE CURED, because, you'll always want more, more, more, more, more.....................etc. Owning chickens is a 'Healthy Addiction', far better than several drugs, and habits, I care not to name! Blood Pressure is lowered (just like other pets), more entertaining than most anything on TV, and saving the best for last, you will laugh more, watching them with their quirky antics. All chickens have their own personalities. People who talk negatively about chickens REALLY DON'T fully know what they are talking about! Your husband should try some chickens, they will open his mind up AND he'll, on down the road a bit, look back, and wonder why he allowed other people to think for him.

My 'chicken whim' began at Easter when i wanted 3 chicks for the kids.
My husband thought I had lost my mind!!!

Now we have about 45, including the 5 babies in the house ;
My husband bought me an incubator for my birthday (cause i couldn't wait til Christmas) and I have 10 eggs in that.

Of course DH thought I was crazy (and still does) but he builds my pens when we need another one, and he'll take a peek at the babies when he walks by, and I've even caught him talking to some of the ones outside.
He always says 'we don't need any more chickens' and , of course i ignore him and do what I want.

He has always said: "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission".
I finally adopted his saying and decided to live by it, as far as chickens are concerned anyway.
I bet now he wishes he had never told me I needed to be more like him.

Anyway, I don't know how I ever lived without chickens.
I sit with mine several times during the day and will go out and just look at them several times a day.
Each of my 3 kids even have "their own chickens" and they go out and sit with theirs.
But I warn you, if you start with 2 or 3, you'll soon have what is referred to as "chickenitis" and then you'll find yourself wanting more and more and more.
But you'll be so amused by the personality of each one, the variety of colors and breeds available, and all of the cute little antics that chickens come up with.
If you're looking for anything other than encouragement, you've come to the wrong place!!

GOOD LUCK! and keep us posted what kind you get and how many you get.

My DH was totally against getting chickens for 2 years. I had read 3 books on them and he still wasn't going to let me have them.

Then we started our own business, and he decided that Chickens would help cut down the food bill and bring in a little egg money. So I just said whatever you say dear, and I was totally excited!

Now that we've had them for a few weeks, he just loves them. They are so entertaining, and really have not been a problem at all. We've even started brooding them for other people and selling them once they are fully feathered.

They just crack me up.

I think I will try the asking for forgiveness rather than permission

DH gets stressed out easily, he sees the chickens as one more thing to take care of. I see it as an experience and something the kids and I will enjoy. Do you think he will believe me if I say I found some baby chicks wondering along side the road and I just couldn't leave them there

I am also one that does not care what others think about me, maybe to a fault. Sometimes I do things just because people tell me it won't work. I have three dogs and three cats, most people would think that is insane. I have no desire to add any more house pets, so I think chickens are perfect.

I also find that as I approach my 30's I am a little bored with the cookie cutter houses with the cookie cutter yards, etc... I would love for my kids to be excited over an egg found in the coop, rather than what Pokemon card she got. I am about ready to throw her Nintendo DS out the window! I want to be different, normal seems rather boring.

Let me tell you what I did.

I mentioned it once in awhile that I would like to have chickens. Our neighbor had 2 and they came in our yard, after about the 5th time my husband said if they come over here again I am going to keep them.

What I heard was....... Tonya you can go and get your chickens.

Well I waited about a week and the feed store had their final shipment of chicks for the year. I had to buy them then or it was wait until next spring.

I came home with 7. I had them all set up when he came home.

He ranted. He ranted some more.

A few days later I caught him looking at the chicks.

Then he asked if they were warm enough.

This past weekend he told me... "if you want eggs in the winter we are going to need to put a light in the coop"

Tonya

Hoping you get your chickies

This morning DH said I could get some chickens!!!
big_smile.png
He said that I have to get the materials to build the coop and not spend anything. The only cost should be in the actual chickens and the food and supplies. So I signed up for freecycle and have all winter to get stuff around and design the coop based on what I can get for free. I actually have a lot of stuff to get rid of, so freecycle will be a good thing. I think he thinks by telling me that I have to do it for no cost will make me not want to mess with it... little does he know;)

WOO HOO:cool: Now make sure you sign up for your local Craiglist too. People give away some good items. Go to google and enter your town (or nearest large town) and state and craiglist. Several should pop up. Then there is a free stuff section. GOOD LUCK!!
