Did she hide the egg?

Yesterday while out in the run, one of my chickens started screeching to get to the nest box. She went in and sat and sat and sat and sat and sat. She would leave and come back but mostly just sat. I saw her for over an hour. When I went back to check on her, she came running up to me. Somehow I guess I forgot to shut the coop door?? I don't know but when I checked the egg boxes, there was no egg. She didn't lay an egg today either. Do they sometimes act like they are going to lay and then not? Today when I put her in the coop in the afternoon, thinking she might be ready to lay, she just screeched and complained and flopped around the coop until I let her out. What is she doing?
