I have 2 bantam chicks hatched by first time mom around Thanksgiving and it is cold!!! I literally am a back yard chicken person and did not expect babies this late. They hatched in a small fenced pen with daddy and 2 hens. I feared for their safety, but the rooster and aunt took right to them I then feared about the cold as it has been down to 16 a few nights and many days barely getting above freezing. I only have a tarp over them to shield them from the cold. For 2 weeks now the chicks can fly to the top of the nesting box with the daddy and aunt where they always roost, and they have been staying under mom. For the past few night I have checked on them to find them being shared with the aunt and last night they were under daddy's wing sound asleep. This might not be unusual, but it is the first for me!!
