Is my compost pile going to catch fire?!?!?!?! I've always heard that chicken poop on a pile will catch fire. I have a compost pile. It's rotten food, old pine shavings and 24 chickens worth of poop. I've been watering it, but today was the first time I took the pitch fork to it. STEAM was rising up out of it and even in the 95+ degree weather I could feel HEAT coming from it. It also smells like a trash dump!!!

Am I doing something wrong?

Nope!

Just keep turning it.

It's supposed to get hot, but it won't get hot enough to catch fire. I've read that if you put a layer of dirt on top it will hold the stink down. Also, don't put any kind of meat or fats in it, only vegetable/plant matter & manure (but not from meat-eating animals like dogs/cats).
Good luck with your compost!
