I'm so confused as to the difference between Ameraucauna and Araucana. also, I've seen 'Americana' so I'm wondering if that is just a different spelling?

Americana or any other spelling of Ameraucana is pretty much always just going to be an EE. The misspelling is the hatcheries way of tricking buyers into thinking they are buying the real breed. An EE is simply a mix made from an Ameraucana. True Ameraucana chickens come in select color variants and have a breed standard whereas EEs do not because they are not a true breed. @EmmaRainboe has posted a lot of info about this (she’s the Ameraucana police lol)- I think she may have an article too?

Araucanas have ear tufts as their stand out feature and are a true breed with an SOP themselves.

This. Araucana’s also come in a rumpless variety, which are very cool looking 🙂

I always joke I’ve got wanna-be Araucanas whenever my birds molt their tails 🤣
The first one I ever saw was a roo that didn’t want me near his hens and started crowing his head off. I looked at his owner and said something like “Dude, what did you do to your bird?!” He still sold me an Ameraucana, who later turned out to be a roo himself 😭

While we’re on the topic…

I’ve noticed in all three of the EEs I’ve had so far that their voices are deep, loud and raspy and quite different from any of my other bird’s voices. Could just be individual but I wonder if this is a trait anyone has seen in Ameraucanas? I don’t know much about the breed, only what Emma has shoved down my throat lol.

It’s been 3 years since I had my first boy, all I remember is he was LOUD! I have a 3 month old Ameraucana now, and she sort of “honks”. My Welsummer honked too 🙂

Ameraucanas have beards and tufts, whereas Araucanas normally have tufts. Ameraucanas have a more docile temperament normally. Araucanas are from South America, Chile I think, whereas Ameraucanas were bred in North America and are descendants of Araucanas.
