Difference between oyster shell and oyster shell grit.

I’m confused.. what is the difference between oyster shell and oyster shell grit..?! I understand the difference and importance of the grit and shell but when both are combined I’m confused.

Buying oyster shell grit, does it provide the same benefits as oyster shell ?. Can someone clear up this confusion cuz I can’t seem to find the answer! Thank you

I have never seen it combined before. But your birds do need both. Can’t see it being a issue. I feed Purina layena with oyster pre mixed with grit free choice. Hope this helps

Oyster shell and oyster shell grit are interchangeable. Despite the name, oyster shell grit cannot be used as grit.

live in Australia and can’t seem to get my hands on Oyster shell... but the combination is quite easy to find! My ladies free range, so I gather their need for grit isn’t as important as the shell. Guess I’ll give it a go! Thank you for your reply, where do you live.. ?

Yes the product that is labeled oyster shell grit is just a finer version of oyster shell. It does not contain any grit in it and will not serve as grit. The term grit is added to the name because of the size they grind the oyster shell into. The poultry will need a source of grit as well whether the grit be crushed granite or whatever the poultry can find naturally occurring in the ground.

Crushed oyster shell and oyster shell grit are one and the same.

Oyster shell grit is soluble grit, not to be confused with insoluble grit, often sold as crushed granite.

Insoluble grit is essential for crushing solids in the digestive tract, as the birds do not chew.

Soluble oyster shell grit adds essential calcium required for egg laying, dissolving slowly and allowing the bird to absorb more than finely crushed pieces such as crushed eggshells which pass through the digestive tract too quickly.

Both should be offered freechoice, the birds will know when they need to ingest more.
