difference between the alfalfa we eat n what our livestock eats?

You can also get alfalfa cubes most places and just soak them or smash them up so the chickens can eat them easier. Granted certain vitamins are damaged by drying but those should be easily found in any fresh grass or forage besides alfalfa.

Why not just feed the birds alfalfa hay? That's what we do. We have a small hay feeder in the chicken pen and they help themselves. They eat a surprising amount of it.

Hi,
I feed clover, BOSS, Oat, Wheat sprouts. If you can not find the alfalfa you should be able to find clover seed. (Both small legume seeds)

Personally I think sunflower, oat and wheat sprouts or grain are great, but I suspect having small legume grains/seeds in their diet is even better!

Some one please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the treatment on seeds such as alfalfa and clover (both legumes) is just a biological inoculate and could be rinsed off at the time of sprouting.

I also feed alfalfa meal, but feel the nutrients in that are different than those of alfalfa seed or sprouts. (Again, just farmboy logic not scientific fact for me..!)

well, id prefer alfalfa that hast been dried out....bc as mentioned earlier it does wipe out a lot of the vitamins.....plus what if i want some for my sandwich? id rather grow it then buy it at the store

I'm not sure if you realize that alfalfa has been genetically engineered. Monsanto makes an alfalfa seed that is called "Roundup ready". That means that if you have used this seed and have weeds in your field, you can spray the entire field with Roundup and the plants will cope(I'm not sure how) with the Roundup. The plants themselves will remain unharmed. I do not know how much residual Roundup remains in the plant--if any. Be careful of what you buy--seeds or hay.
