How can you tell what he is. Someone she a aracana and big acres where I got him said Ameracana (both spelled wrong I am sure)

There is still a giant mixup and confusion as to the names Araucana, Ameraucana, and Easter Egger.

Many people use them INCORRECTLY. MANY people, as well as many hatcheries and feed stores and the people that work in those places.

However, to clear up the confusion, pick up the APA guide (American Poultry Association). The APA has a list of all of the breeds that they recognize, as well as the recognized colors for each breed.

To get a breed recognized by the APA, a group of breeders have to get together, and agree as to what the breed that they are breeding is supposed to look like. Should it have muffs? An upright tail? A long tail or a short one? Etc. Etc. Etc, All of the breeders talk it over and agree, and then they try to promate their breed and take their breed to shows.

Once you can show the APA that a breed has a certain number of breeders, and has been shown at a certain number of shows (I don't remember what the numbers are, but it is pretty much a proof that a breed is viable here in the US) then it gets added to the APA list along with the standard that the breeders agreed on.

So..... EEs are NOT on the APA list, because they are really a mutt, or maybe you could call them a land race.. But the point is that they do not breed true. The fun of having EEs is that you never know exactly what colors the chicks will be, the adults will be, or the color of the eggs.

Ameraucanas and Araucanas ARE both accepted by the APA and there are certain standards that they must meet in order to be an Ameraucana or an Araucana.

Your rooster does not follow the standards of either the Ameraucana or the Araucana breeds.
