Hi Everyone... I have two 2 week old Ameracauna chicks. Same hatch day, unknown parents .. could be same could be not.. one is thriving beautifully, the other much slower and battling pasty butt. I’ve stayed on top of butt and doing better... she’s just much smaller, not as strong.. eats, drinks, poos.. have you ever seen them with such differences and come out ok in the end? Any suggestions? Thx Dawn

I'm in the same boat! One of my chicks battled with pasty butt and now he's weaker/smaller then the others! I don't know what it is, but I'll be sure to follow this thread closely. I tried giving my chick sugar water to help boost his energy. It didn't do much, but you could try it if you want.

Does your chick by any chance have droopy wings?

Hi Cisco.. no, can’t say that.. she is preening and eating and drinking... just seems weaker.. not flying up to brooder edge etc.. tiny also.. I’m sorry you are struggling too.. I contacted the breeder ( I’ve always gotten my hens from her.. perfect health every time ) she feels the next week or so should tell if she tnrives or I lose her. I raised the heat source today as someone said that may help with pasty butt. Please let me know how you are making out !

Well, if it makes you feel better, she already sounds better then my chick! The heat should probably help, and I'll be sure to give you updates/advice I've gotten on this end. Good luck! :)

I have 2 Ameracauna chicks also and had the same thing, except for pasty butt. One was so much smaller. I added vitamins to their water and at four weeks they are both thriving, although the one chick is still smaller, but developing normally otherwise and thinks she's a big guy! Try the vitamins

The chick in my profile picture struggled with pasty butt, though I was always sure to stay on top of it. S/he was always smaller, but s/he always ate, drank, and defecated fine. Now s/he is a healthy, happy 7 week old that is thriving, though still just a tiny bit smaller than the rest. I would say keep an eye on your chick, but don't worry about it too much.

Thank you for the encouragement! I usually don’t get them this small, so a lot of new learning here. You know you love your chickens when you wash their butts lol I’m heading to TSC tomorrow ... can I get vitamins there? This is also my first batch on medicated chich feed.. so I had that on my mind as well.. we got 14 new chicks this year ( chicken math gone wrong lol ) so I wanted to not worry about coccidia since they were so young. Ok, so vitamins.. TSC??

We were planning on getting ducks this year and I have heard you can't use medicated feed for them, so we bought unmedicated. Afterwards though, we changed our minds and stuck to chickens. They have been thriving and no incidents with coccidia! SO true about washing your chicken's butts :lau
