Hi, my name is Olga.
I am new at keeping chickens, so new that I haven't any yet! So I need help:/ I will like to get thirteen different breeds, like 8 of each and a respecting rooster. Can I keep them in the same coop, or the roosters are indiscriminatoty. I would like the breeds to stay pure. Thanks, expecting your help! :)

roosters don't discriminate between breeds, so if u want them to breed pure breeds, u will have to keep them seperated

The breeds will stay pure unless you hatch from to different breeds. Theres no harm in keeping different breeds together. If you want pure then you need a rooster for each breed in which case to hatch pure chicks .

Yes they can go together are you planning on hatching eggs also what breeds.

If you want to have pure bred chickens you need to have the hens all the same breed and have a breeding pen with the same breed rooster. You have to keep them penned as long as you want pure hatching eggs. You need an escape proof pen (covered) so other roosters don't fly in for a visit and corrupt your breeding program.

If you want 13 different breeds to stay pure(for hatching eggs) you will have to divide them all up into 13 separate breeding pens with a rooster of the same breed as the hens, and no other breeds mixed in with them.

That's a lot of breeding pens to keep up. You can't have all breeds & roosters loose in the coop because they will breed to any birds they please- that will give you mixed breeds.

Welcome to BYC!

Drumstick Diva X2 In order to keep them pure, you will need to keep them all separate. Roosters will breed with any hens.

Good luck on this journey and welcome to our flock!

I did just as you with my first chickens, only I got 38 with 20 different breeds. Sometimes you will end up with an extra rooster like I did, so don't order too many. Mine all got along fine, even the banties. It's so much fun to see the different colors and breeds, being able to tell them apart, and learn which breeds you like best. I would probably get a rooster and 2 pullets of the breed I might like to breed. I would get the chickens I wanted now, because it can be hard to bring in new chickens to the flock since they will not get along until they have been slowly integrated. Also make your coop much larger than you think it should be, since there will be days they can go outside. Have fun and welcome to BYC.
